Matthew 10:27-31 – “Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father’s care. And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.”
A couple of days ago my husband, Ken, almost lost it in the kitchen. Our refrigerator started to leak and he did absolutely everything he could do to hunt down whatever it was that was causing that leak. It prompted a great discussion about how and to what extent the Lord of the universe is interested in a broken valve in the back of a refrigerator. I mean, is God concerned about those kind of details? Does he care; I mean really care, about the “little things?”
Well, Ken’s not alone; you identify. You’ve got piles of dishes that need to be done. You’ve experienced times when your dishwasher leaks a big soapy puddle on the floor—and you’ve got people coming in visiting in about an hour. Little things like that. And nobody else in the family seems to notice or pay that much mind… so why should God, do you think? After all, isn’t he the God of BIG things? Sure, the Bible says he has compassion for His people, but isn’t that a kind of “general” compassion for all of humankind? Just how intimately is God involved in our small, petty problems?
I remember my own earthly father and the way he worried about the little things in my life; homework… my piano recitals… the safe confines of my backyard… when I cut my knee, for some reason, it was Daddy who was more ready with the bottle of alcohol than anybody. And, if I needed a new rivet on the girth strap of my pony’s saddle, Daddy knew it needed to be fixed before I even realized there was a problem. His was father-love, specific love, detailed love… he cared about the little things. And that is the sort of compassion your heavenly Father has for you today.
It’s Father love. Its detailed love, specific. The kind, gentle compassion of a dad who deeply cares for his sons and daughters… all the little things; your Father who knows how many hairs you have on your head. Maybe you never had an earthly dad like that… but you know what? You have such a Father in heaven. He is the God of all your little things. (Taken with edits from Joni E. Tada).
Let’s praise and thank our heavenly Father today for his detailed, specific love for us. Let’s not be afraid as we receive how much more worth we have to him than the sparrows. Let’s pray for those whom we know that have yet to experience or haven’t experienced in a long time, how much our Father cares for and knows them.
