Revelation 21:1-8 (NIV)
Then I saw “a new heaven and a new earth,” for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. ‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’ u or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”
He who was seated on the throne said, “I am making everything new!” Then he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.”
He said to me: “It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To the thirsty I will give water without cost from the spring of the water of life. Those who are victorious will inherit all this, and I will be their God and they will be my children. But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars—they will be consigned to the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death.
Revelation 22:12-17 (NIV)
“Look, I am coming soon! My reward is with me, and I will give to each person according to what they have done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End. “Blessed are those who wash their robes, that they may have the right to the tree of life and may go through the gates into the city. Outside are the dogs, those who practice magic arts, the sexually immoral, the murderers, the idolaters and everyone who loves and practices falsehood. “I, Jesus, have sent my angel to give you this testimony for the churches. I am the Root and the Offspring of David, and the bright Morning Star.” The Spirit and the bride say, “Come!” And let the one who hears say, “Come!” Let the one who is thirsty come; and let the one who wishes take the free gift of the water of life.
Reflection:
The book of Revelation describes two eternal destinies – those whose names are written in the book of life and those whose names are not.Anne Graham Lotz, the daughter of the famous evangelist Billy Graham, shares a story about who are the children of God- those included in the book of life:
In my little book “Heaven: My Father’s House,” I tell about people who want to visit my father’s home in western North Carolina. They drive up the long drive and come to the gate. They knock on the gate and say, “Billy Graham, let us in. We’ve read your books, we’ve watched you on TV, we’ve written to you, and we want to come to your house.” And my father says, “Depart from me, I don’t know you. You’re not a member of my family, and you’ve not made any arrangements to come.” But when I drive up that same driveway and knock on the gate, I say, “Daddy, this is Anne, and I’ve come home.” The gate is thrown right open, and I go inside, because I’m the father’s child.
As God’s children, we can live victorious lives in relationship with our Father carrying a hope of one day being with Him forever in a great city of glory. And those who enter into the gates are those who God knows and recognizes as His own children. This does not include those who merely have knowledge of Him and lived according to their own ways (21:8)- the cowardly, unbelieving, and vile and etc.It is God’s children who have faithfully and victoriously followed His ways in relationship with Him, so can appropriately call Him “Abba” Father.
Responding to the Transmission:
Spend time in prayer drawing near to our Father God because He promises that He will also draw near to us.May our hearts and mind find home in His wonderful love and presence as we wait to be with Him eternally.
