Intern of the Week: Maryann Covert for Financial Economics

<Tagline>Learn about Maryann’s experience at Louis Vuitton!</Tagline>

Name: Maryann Covert

Internship, Co-op or Research Site: Louis Vuitton Corporate Events

Location of the Organization (City, State): San Francisco

Major(s)/Minor(s): Financial Economics

Expected Graduation Year: 2014

Briefly describe your internship, co-op, research, or service- learning opportunity, including your day-to-day tasks, responsibilities, and assignments.

As an assistant to the Louis Vuitton's Corporate Events Director, I am spending my summer working on events for the San Francisco-based Louis Vuitton Cup. I work on each and every detail of our numerous events. From parties to boat rides to guest transfers, I create and simplify the necessary spreadsheets and documents.

What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization/company?

Helping plan events is the most stressful yet rewarding job I've ever done. The weeks, then days, leading up to events are insanely stressful and busy. However, the feeling of completion cannot be beaten. This weekend we are hosting a party for over 700 guests, most of which are not local, meaning I have to help arrange transportation, food, side-events, and lodging. I not only adore this job because of its level of difficulty, but especially because of the relief and satisfaction of having planned and executed a successful event.

What have you gained from your experience that you could not have gained from another opportunity?

Louis Vuitton, as the world’s top luxury goods company, offers me more opportunities to make valuable contacts than I would have anywhere else. This experience has also demonstrated the high value of a positive relationship with an employer; a great recommendation is an enormous piece of any job application.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

Networking is key. When you meet someone, get their name or their card and be sure to follow up! Sending an email within a day of making his or her acquaintance is a sure way to remind the person who you are and why you're worth remembering.

How do you see your experience as meaningful? This might involve skills you've gained, information you've learned, mentors you've connected with, or projects you've completed.

My experience has and continues to be hugely meaningful, as it has helped to show me the corporate world from a very different perspective. This job has taught me the meaning of hard work, diligence, thoroughness, and the value of a positive attitude, all of which are especially relevant as I prepare to enter the workforce full time.

Please provide a short quote about what you liked most about your position / earning internship credit / the internship placement process / the Shriver Center:

Earning credit for this job is absolutely amazing, as it gives me even more incentive to work and work hard! Knowing that what I do pays off in more ways than one is immensely rewarding, and the Shriver Center made it easy to do!

Latest information about an exciting career opportunity with the State
Policy Fellowship Program just posted, which could be the perfect for
some students or recent graduates. Its goal is to help build a diverse
generation of future leaders who will shape state policies that affect
    disadvantaged families and communities.

The Fellowship is sponsored the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, a
national policy institute, and the State Fiscal Analysis Initiative
(SFAI), a network of public policy organizations in over 40 states that
participate in debates over budget and tax issues and other issues in
their states that affect disadvantaged communities and families.

Below are key details on the program:
- Fellows will spend two years as entry-level analysts working with a
state policy organization belonging to the nationwide SFAI network.
- Fellows will research and write analyses on current policy issues;
brief policymakers, journalists, and others on these issues; and serve
as a resource for advocates and community groups.
- These are paid, full time positions with benefits.
- Fellows will participate in a professional development program that
includes a week-long seminar in Washington, D.C. and additional training
opportunities, including national policy conferences. Additionally,
fellows will be partnered with mentors who are leaders in their field.
- To be eligible for the program, candidates must 1) have a graduate
degree in public policy, public affairs, economics, social work, public
health, law, or a related field by August 2014, 2) have a strong
academic record, and 3) be eligible to work in the United States for the
     two-year duration of the program.

Application requirements include a personal essay, resume, copies of
undergraduate and graduate transcripts, and two letters of
recommendation. Completed applications must be submitted by January 24,
2014, but we encourage applicants to apply earlier. The fellowship
will begin in the latter part of August 2014.

Tip of the Week: 5 Steps To Improve Your Online Profile

<Tagline>From John Sumser, founder and editor-in-chief of HRExaminer</Tagline>

Story from: http://www.youtern.com/thesavvyintern/index.php/2011/10/04/5-steps-to-improve-your-online-profile-get-noticed/

5 Steps To Improve Your Online Profile & Get Noticed

While the good old resume is in no danger of disappearing, you’d better have your online profiles in shape.

Something like 80% of all employers check you out online when you apply for a job. Assuming that you’re smart enough to have tailored your Facebook profile during the job hunt, you need tofocus on the things that will get you noticed, examined and hired.

While it used to be true that LinkedIn was THE place to host your professional profile, upstarts like BeKnown (from Monster) are making headway in the social job hunt. You’ll want to test out the new sites by building a profile and watching the results. It’s worth noting that the newer entrants have more reason to work for your success. After all, like you, they are trying to make a name for themselves.

When you post a profile or resume somewhere, you only have one goal: to get noticed by the right recruiter for the right job. Once your resume is on the list, it needs to grab the recruiter’s attention with data points that highlight your success and effectiveness in jobs like the one you want. Your profile needs to scream “Pick me! pick me! pick me! Hey, look over here and pick me.”

Here are five steps to improve your profile to get the attention you want.

Study the descriptions of jobs you’d like to have. Read the job descriptions and learn the jargon. Print out 20. Prioritize them (from 1 to 20) by the degree of their appeal to you. Go over them line by line with the person who is your job hunt sounding board. Be able to explain why you prefer one over the other.

Now that you have a very clear picture of which words recruiters are using to define the jobs you want, make a list of the 30 most commonly used words in those job descriptions. This is a critical step. These are the words that recruiters are searching for when you want them to find you.

With the list in hand, rewrite your profile to make sure that you use each of those keywords at least 3 times in your profile. Be careful to make sure that your language flows gracefully.
