That way, they will be on the lookout for your application or, at the very least, your name will ring a bell when they see it. Be strategic with your timing, though; don’t call them at 8:15 on a Monday morning when they’ll be crazy busy or 5:00 p.m. on a Friday when the only thing on their mind is going home.

Be One of the Few Who Follow Up

You might not be able to get hold of them on the first attempt, or they might not respond to your first email. But it’s okay to follow up on your messages as long as you don’t do it too often. Waiting at least a week is usually recommended, but it depends on who you’re working with.Don’t think of following up as bothering the recruiter; think of it as showing how much of a go-getter you are.

Get the Recruiter’s Name Right

Your ultimate aim here is to make a good impression, which won’t happen if you get their name wrong. Even if you’re looking at several different opportunities, make sure you know who you’re contacting each time and address that person appropriately. It is also critical to get their title, and their gender, correct.

Make Your Resume Catchy

Have a catchy personal profile or summary at the top that makes you sound interesting and committed. Recruiters read hundreds of profiles, and the more you can make yours stand out, the better. Don’t use the usual generic spiel and buzzwords—aim to think outside the box while remaining professional.

Prioritize Information

Your resume can only be one or two pages, so the details you include need to be maximally relevant and advantageous. The information recruiters are looking for to bump you up the queue are your key skills and experience, so internships and job experience should be prominent. Emphasize the responsibilities and skills you acquired at each role by listing them under each title.

Be Interesting

Hobbies and interests may not seem like the most critical section on your resume, but they’re still important. This is where you can show what you’re like as a person and what makes you different and fun. Don’t write about your run-of-the-mill hobbies like “watching movies” or “listening to music”; instead, include interests that give you a sense of uniqueness, traits that will help the recruiter remember you.

Apply Early

It shows dedication, organization and awareness if you apply long before the deadline. It also means your resume will be one of the first the recruiter sees, and if it impresses them, it makes their job—and yours!—a lot easier. When you decide you want to apply somewhere, don’t stall; get that application out as soon as possible.

Your resume has exactly one chance to impress. Diligently follow these steps… and get your resume on the fast-track to the recruiter’s ‘yes’ pile!

Intern of the Week: Marissa Pigeols for English, History

<Tagline>Marissa’s experience at the Social Security Administration</Tagline>

Name: Marissa Pigeols

Internship, Co-op or Research
Site: Office of External Affairs, Social Security Administration

Major(s)/Minor(s): English,
    History, Media & Communication Studies

Expected Graduation Year: 2016

Briefly describe your internship, co-op, research, or service- learning
opportunity, including your day-to-day tasks, responsibilities, and
    assignments.

My internship is with the Office of External Relations within Social
Security Administration. As the name of my position (Social Media Intern) may
suggest, my assignments have all been within the realm of social media. Some of
my assignments have included: writing blog posts for the Office of the
Inspector General’s (OIG) blog, By the Numbers, designing award certificates
for employees, designing banners for web pages, designing info graphics for
OIG’s Facebook page, and completing other various editing tasks.

What have you enjoyed the most about your position or
    organization/company?

I have strongly enjoyed using my design and editing skills in a
practical manner. Everything I had designed up to this point had been for
personal use. The items I designed for OER were to be used on their main web
pages, their blogs, and their Facebook page. The certificate was likely my
favorite thing to create, as I knew other people would be directly receiving
it. Creating graphics for other people was incredibly rewarding.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an
    internship or similar experience?

Keep an open mind. When I received an invitation to apply for the
internship, I was surprised - I had never applied for this. It turned out
they’d received my resume from the school and were interested in interviewing
me. I was apprehensive at first, considering I already had a summer job, but I
went for it and I’m so glad I did! It ended up being such a great opportunity
to test my design and writing skills and to learn more about public relations.

How do you see your experience as meaningful? This might involve skills
you’ve gained, information you’ve learned, mentors you’ve connected with, or
    projects you’ve completed.

Before this internship, I knew very little about Social Security. I
knew I had a SS number, and I knew I needed to protect this number to prevent
my identity from being stolen. Through writing blog posts and reading
testimony, I learned that crimes concerning Social Security can be the kind
that destroys lives. As I have many elderly relatives, this kind of information
    was both concerning and valuable.

Please provide a short quote about what you liked most about your
position / earning internship credit / the internship placement process / the
    Shriver Center:

I have always been interested in both writing and design, but was
unsure about exactly what I wanted to do in those areas. Working with External
Relations made me realize that whatever product you produce, be it a blog post
or an info graphic, is useless if you don’t have a message you need to get
across and an audience to consume it. The people I worked with understood this
perfectly. They needed to help the American public understand the work SSA is
doing, and have been adapting social media and 21st century technologies to
ensure this happens. I now have a better understanding of the importance of
social media and communication in such a plugged-in world.

Environmental Science Internship with the Smithsonian

The Smithsonian Environmental Research Center's (SERC) Internship Program offers undergraduate and beginning graduate students a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the fields of environmental research and education. This program enables students to work on specific projects under the direction of SERC's professional staff and is tailored to provide the maximum educational benefit to each participant.

Since 2001 the SERC internship program has been designated a REU (Research Experience for Undergraduates) site by the National Science Foundation. With this funding, along with generous donations from the Smithsonian Women's Committee, and University partnerships we are able to provide internship opportunities to qualified undergraduate students looking to further their knowledge in the sciences.

Projects include terrestrial, atmospheric and estuarine environmental research within the disciplines of ecology, biology, chemistry, microbiology, botany, zoology, mathematics and physics. Projects are also offered in environmental education and media. Although students will become familiar with all the research being conducted by a particular staff member and with much of the research of SERC in general, individuals will devote most of their time to a project and content area of particular interest to them. Students will have the opportunity to expand their knowledge in a selected field of study and to learn a variety of research techniques through firsthand experience. At the conclusion of the internship, student participants will be expected to present the findings of their independent projects in a formal seminar to the SERC community.

Selection is based upon the student's academic credentials, extent of relevant training or experience, letters of recommendation, and the congruence of the student's expressed goals with those of the internship program. The Smithsonian does not discriminate on grounds of race, creed, sex, age, marital status, handicap or national origin of any applicant.

The specific dates and duration of the internship appointment are arranged between the supervisor and the student. However, internship appointments are generally full time (40 hours per week), 10 to 16 weeks in length, and coincide with the usual academic semesters and summer terms.

Applicants must register and submit an application on line:
https://solaa.si.edu/solaa/SOLAAHome.html
Select Smithsonian Environmental Research Center Internship Program from the drop down list of programs.
