Election Announcement Election announcement and nomination

We invite self-nominations to become representatives on the UMBC Adjunct Faculty Advisory Committee (AFAC). The AFAC is an elected body charged with representing the interests of our part-time adjunct faculty within our campus system of shared governance. Members of the AFAC are responsible for communicating adjunct needs and concerns to the campus administration, making recommendations related to adjunct professional development and working conditions, and providing advice on policies and procedures that concern adjunct faculty. In recognition that adjunct faculty are compensated only for course-by-course instructional services, 

AFAC members receive a yearly stipend equivalent to one semester course and are reimbursed for travel and other reasonable expenses, consistent with USM and UMBC travel policies.

AFAC representatives will serve a two-year term from Fall 2025 through Spring 2027.

Elections are being held for 4 AFAC representatives:

2 representatives from CAHSS

1 representative from CNMS

1 representative from COEIT.

1 representative that is non-college affiliated.

All Adjunct I,  Adjunct II, and Adjunct III faculty employed to provide instruction on a course-by-course basis at UMBC this spring, including UMBC programs at Shady Grove, who have taught in this capacity at UMBC for at least four previous semesters, are eligible for nomination. 

Please note that regular faculty and staff at UMBC who receive additional compensation to teach on a course-by-course basis are not eligible to serve on the AFAC.  

Self-nominations must include name, College, and length of service at UMBC as well as responses to the following questions:

1.       What strengths do you think you would bring to the AFAC? (200 words or less)

2.       What issues do you think the AFAC should be addressing during the 2025-2026 academic year? (200 words or less)

Candidate statements and voting instructions will be posted the following week and voting will take place from Monday, May 5th to Wednesday. May 14th

Dear Adjunct Faculty Colleagues,

The Office for Academic & Pre-Professional Advising has openings available for Summer Orientation Advisors! Advisors meet with incoming undergraduate students VIRTUALLY during the months of June-August in one-on-one sessions to plan out and register for classes. No previous experience is required, and we will provide all training necessary!

Besides compensation, this is a rare chance for adjunct faculty to gain advising experience, highly sought-after in faculty openings, as well as to interact with students outside of the classroom. As an adjunct faculty member myself, I can absolutely say that my teaching effectiveness has been augmented by my advising experience.

Advisors are eligible to be compensated at the rate of $100 per afternoon session and $50 per evening or morning session, with the opportunity to work several sessions during the month. Participants are also eligible to earn the Orientation Advisor microcredential! More information on microcredentials and Digital Badging can be found here: https://badges.umbc.edu/

How can we share who we are and co-construct a learning community with our students? How can we connect to the wide range of resources that UMBC offers? Next we discuss how to deepen this community connection: creating choices, cultivating competency, and connecting students’ work in your course to their own goals and dreams engages students through intrinsic motivation. Plus we answer any pressing questions about AI, ungrading, and other innovations in higher education.

Last week, I was thrilled to share that UMBC is kicking off a strategic planning process this semester. This is an exciting opportunity for us to envision UMBC’s future together and determine how we can be a catalyst for progress in higher education. Your input is essential to this work; we  will include the broad UMBC community in a variety of ways throughout this year-long process. 

Foundational to envisioning the future of any organization is understanding our shared values—the fundamental beliefs or principles that guide our core work, actions, and goals. To that end, we would like to invite all students, faculty, and staff to take this short, anonymous survey so that we may assess the values important to our community. Please complete the survey by November 17.

You can sign up early here.  We are working on getting a stipend for adjunct faculty that attend.  This is a mandatory training under Federal guidelines.  We are also exploring an on-line version for those who cannot make it to campus.
