    <div class="html-content"><p><span><strong><span>Happy spring!</span></strong></span><span></span></p>
    
    <p><span><span>Below is a partial run-down of stipends (teaching pay) for adjunct
    faculty in the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences at UMBC.
    Stipends are for teaching a 3-credit course per semester, except as noted otherwise. Based on
    information received and public record. Corrections, clarifications, additions
    welcome.</span></span><span> </span></p>
    
    <p><span> </span></p>
    
    <p><span><strong><span>AMST. </span></strong></span><span>When </span><span>I became adjunct II, it went up to $3,800. That's where it is now.</span></p><p><span><strong><span>ANCS. </span></strong></span><span>Happy to help!<strong>  </strong>$3,500
    for a 3-credit course, for an Adjunct I. Stipend may be split between two
    departments.<span> </span></span></p><p><span><span><strong>Asia Studies.</strong> </span></span><span>In my department pay is $4000 per semester for adjunct faculty. Hope this helps. </span></p>
    
    <p><span><strong><span>DANC. </span></strong></span><span><span> </span>[From the chair:] “</span><span>The Dance Department pays an average of $3300
    for a 3 credit course, depending on the meeting pattern for the course.” </span></p>
    
    <p><span><strong><span>ECON.</span></strong></span><span> The stipends vary depending on course
    level. Basic accounting stipend is $3,600 per section. More for Intermediate or
    Advanced Accounting.<span> </span></span></p>
    
    <p><span><strong><span>Education.</span></strong></span><span> Stipend for Adjunct II may be $5,000
    per course.<span> </span></span></p>
    
    <p><span><strong><span>Emergency Health Services.</span></strong></span><span> Minimum
    stipend for adjunct faculty is $3,000.<span> </span></span></p>
    
    <p><span><strong><span>ENGL.</span></strong></span><span>  Stipend for a 3-</span><span>credit composition course is $3,300 for Adjunct I and $3,600 for Adjunct II. One 4-credit course (English 110) pays $4,300 for Adjunct I and $4,700 for Adjunct II. </span><span>No
    differentiation for PhD or for teaching upper-level courses.<span> Stipends for some literature classes in ENGL have differed from stipends in writing sections. </span></span></p>
    
    <p><span><strong><span>HIST.</span></strong></span><span> Stipend varies with rank of adjunct.
    Affiliated Adjunct Professors in History may be the best-paid category of adjunct faculty in
    CAHSS. [From the chair:] "</span><span>Adjunct pay in History varies by rank of adjunct. Minimum stipend is 4500 for a three credit course."</span></p>
    
    <p><span><strong><span>Linguistics.</span></strong></span><span> $3,500 per course in
    Linguistics. May be higher for Adjunct II.<span> </span></span></p>
    
    <p><span><strong><span>Modern Languages. </span></strong></span><span>Grad students have priority in
    teaching but lower stipend because their tuition is waived/free, and the
    stipend covers just living expenses. Grad students have mandatory health
    insurance. Stipend for Adjunct II may be up to $3,700 for a 4-credit course.<span> </span></span></p>
    
    <p><span><strong><span>Music. </span></strong></span><span>Instrumental music classes may be
    one credit hour. Adjunct stipend may go down to $954.45 per class. Adjunct
    stipend for a 3-credit course $3,500.<span> </span></span></p>
    
    <p><span><strong><span>PHIL.</span></strong></span><span> [From the chair:] “</span><span>The Philosophy Dept. pays all Adjunct I’s $4,000 and all Adjunct II’s
    $4,300 per course.</span>” <span><span> </span></span></p>
    
    <p><span><strong><span>Psychology. </span></strong></span><span>Adjunct stipend is $3,500 or $4,000
    per course. Difference for rank or PhD not known.<span> </span></span></p>
    
    <p><span><strong><span>SAHAP.</span></strong></span><span> Adjunct faculty varies with PhD or MA. Stipend for Adjunct II may be $4,500 per course.<span> Adjunct titles in SAHAP include Adjunct Assistant Professor, </span></span><span>Assistant Professor PT,</span><span> </span><span>Lecturer PT, and Instructor PT. </span></p><p><span><span><br></span></span></p>

    <div class="html-content">The UMBC Adjunct Faculty Advisory Committee (AFAC) is very pleased to name the two most recent recipients of AFAC support for their scholarly research.<div><br></div><div>Professor Sandra Dawson (History) presented her paper, "Refugee Committees and the Voluntary Movement in WWII Britain," at the North American Conference on British Studies, Denver, Colorado, November 2017.</div><div><br></div><div>Professor Jacob Straus (Political Science) has been invited to publish "Policy Setting and Agenda Setting by Congressional Leaders," in cooperation with two independent studies students at the Shady Grove campus, in a volume on political leadership and social media edited by David Taras (Mt. Royal University) and Richard Davis (BYU). The chapter will be presented at a workshop at the Banff Conference Centre, May 2018.</div><div><br></div><div><br></div></div>

"Key findings include"
    "The USM Research institutions collectively met the expected instructional
    productivity standards <span>(averaging
    5.7 courses per faculty member).</span>"  </span></p>
    
    <p><span>Page 6. "<span>Course unit</span> is the
    prescribed measure in the governing policy on faculty workload but it is only one
    of several measures that can be used to consider the instructional activity and
    effectiveness of faculty. A second key measure is the production of <span>semester credit hours</span> (SCH).
    Credit hours are the sum of the course hours of all the students taking a
    class. For example, a 3 credit course with 10 students produces 30 semester
    credit hours."</span></p>

    credit hours produced by all faculty including FT faculty and PT faculty</em></strong>. (The most recent data are for 2015-2016). </span></p><p><span>For USM as a whole, PT faculty produced 30 percent of all credit hours taught.     <p><span>The UMBC Adjunct Faculty Advisory
    Committee (AFAC) is pleased to announce that we have professional development
    funding for adjunct faculty. <strong>This is a rolling deadline. <span> Apply within the 2017-2018 academic year.</span></strong></span></p>

    <p><span>UMBC established the fund, to be
    administered annually by the AFAC, to support professional development for
    adjunct faculty. </span></p>

    <p><span>Individual awards will be capped at
    $500 for the academic year. The amount of individual awards may be affected by
    factors including number of applicants. </span></p><p><span><br></span></p><p><span>Note: Successful applicants will be recommended to the Provost's office by the AFAC. The awards are disbursed by the UMBC provost.</span></p>

Drawing your attention especially to the announcement below:</div><div><br></div><div>The College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences is pleased to announce four new, College-level awards that recognize faculty excellence at all stages in a person’s career and in all aspects of the UMBC and College mission. These awards are part of a University-wide initiative, derived from the University strategic plan, to support recognition at the College level. Each award carries a one-time allocation of $2,000 in support of faculty development.<br></div><div><span><br></span></div><div><span>These new, College-based awards are</span></div><div><div><div><div><ul><li><p>Early Career Faculty Excellence Award</p></li><li><p>Mid-Career Faculty Excellence Award</p></li><li><p>Excellence in Teaching Award</p></li><li><p>Adjunct Faculty Excellence Award</p></li></ul></div></div></div></div><div>One award will be made annually in each category.
