To all adjunct faculty at UMBC:
Here is the link to nominate yourself, if you wish to serve on UMBC's Adjunct Faculty Advisory Committee (AFAC):
CAHSS: 2 positions
COEIT: 1 position
CNMS: 1 position
Non-College-Affiliated: 1 position
All positions are two-year terms, staggered by year. Members of the AFAC are elected by adjunct faculty in their respective Colleges.
New members will serve from fall 2018 through spring 2020.

We meet on payday Fridays. Full participation is essential.
Stipend for serving on the committee equivalent to stipend for teaching one (3-credit) course at UMBC per year
Our administrative liaison is Vice Provost Patrice McDermott.
The AFAC was chartered by UMBC President Freeman Hrabowski and Provost Philip Rous.
Nominating and running for the AFAC expresses a commitment. All AFAC members are understood to have an obligation to represent the adjunct faculty at UMBC and to be available to meet with faculty and administrators.
DEADLINES:
- We will ask for nominations to be completed within the next seven days, through (midnight) Thursday, May 3
- Elections will be conducted through the following eight days, ending (midnight) Friday, May 11
- Winning candidates will be notified and introduced as soon as possible after votes are tallied, before end of term Tuesday, May 15

The Center for Social Science Scholarship
[From Dean Scott Casper,] the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences is pleased to announce the creation of The Center for Social Science Scholarship (CS3). Research, education and engagement strongly rooted in the Social Sciences are essential to UMBC’s mission to address the most pressing social challenges of our times . . .
The result of many years of discussion and a year-long planning process involving UMBC and national Social Science scholars, the CS3 has a four-fold mission:
a) to seek out, nurture, and promote excellence in the Social Sciences;
b) to support and strengthen Social Science scholarship at UMBC, including by convening and connecting scholars with shared interests across disciplines;
c) to spotlight Social Science scholarship (research, teaching, and community and professional engagement) at UMBC; and
d) to enhance the future of innovative, collaborative, cross- and inter-disciplinary, and cutting edge Social Science scholarship at UMBC.
The CS3 will be available to all who do Social Science work, including those from other fields who collaborate with Social Science scholars. The CS3 will act as an administrative core for units, programs, sub-centers, and activity clusters such as the Maryland Institute for Policy, Analysis, and Research (MIPAR), the Collaborative for Interdisciplinary Promotion of Health Equity Research (CIPHER), the Social Science Forum (SSF), and other endeavors to be created.
Over time, the CS3 will provide events, training, visibility, and support for grants, activities, and other Social Science initiatives. CS3 programming will embrace all Social Sciences-related scholarship at UMBC, with a special focus on innovative spark, cross-disciplinary opportunity, and the potential to make a difference and deepen understanding within and beyond the academy.
Established with funding from the CAHSS Dean’s Office, the Provost’s Office, and the Office of the Vice President for Research, the CS3 will be led by a faculty Director, to be identified through an internal search in Spring 2018.

AFAC elections for 2018-2019 coming up
Reminder: nominate
A quick FYI and reminder as the end of term approaches: the Adjunct Faculty Advisory Committee (AFAC) will soon post a call for nominations for 2018-2019.
All AFAC members are elected. Adjunct faculty elect the representatives in their own colleges (only). Members of the AFAC serve for two years. Elections are at end of term and are staggered.*
At the end of spring 2018, we will hold elections for five members--two in CAHSS, one in CNMS, one in COEIT, and one non-College-affiliated.
Your honest services are warmly welcomed.
(Note: Since adjunct faculty are not otherwise compensated for university service, there is a modest stipend for serving on the AFAC, equivalent to your department's adjunct stipend for one three-credit course (per year). Therefore the stipend varies somewhat by department.)
If you join us, you will be working for the betterment of all adjunct faculty at UMBC.

New: Year-long contracts option for CAHSS adjunct faculty
CAHSS departments may now offer academic-year contracts
For all adjunct faculty in CAHSS:The College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences has notified departments that they now have the option to offer year-long contracts to adjunct faculty, as appropriate.
The year-long (academic year) contracts were piloted in CAHSS in 2017-2018. The pilot program is now being expanded within CAHSS.
The contract letter is much the same except that the teaching appointment is for the entire academic year (regular fall and spring terms) instead of for a semester.
If interested, please contact your department chair! These contracts help streamline the work of staff and others.
It is projected that CNMS and COEIT will pilot the year-long contract letters next; if successful, the pilot program can then be expanded within those Colleges.
