Dear Faculty Adjuncts,

We wanted to let you know about some free services available to you at UMBC.

Retriever Essentials - is a program to help students and faculty who are in need of food and clothing.  We have 6 locations across campus where one can pick up a bag of nutritionally balanced, non-perishable food and toiletries.  Locations are listed at https://retrieveressentials.umbc.edu/campus-food-zones/distribution-centers/ You are welcome to pick up extra food to tide you over during school breaks.  Please have your campus id with you when you visit one of our locations.  Last year we gave away 279 bags of food.

We have a Coat Closet on campus that provides free, gently used coats, hats, gloves and scarves to students who are unable to purchase these items or for whom it would be a hardship to purchase.  Last year we gave away 200 free coats!  To pick up something, please contact Julie Rosenthal at julier@umbc.edu

Winter Orientation for new students is going to be starting in a few months, and a recent payroll policy change makes adjunct faculty eligible to receive pay for serving as orientation advisors.

The UMBC Orientation Program, led by the Office of Academic and Pre-Professional Advising, assists 100% of students in each incoming class devise a schedule for their first semester by having each student meet individually with an advisor one-on-one for a period of approximately 30 minutes to an hour. A typical day of Orientation will have about 50 advisors seeing between 50-200 students.

It cannot be overstated what a sense of accomplishment it brings to take charge of an incoming student and help brush away the obstacles that stand between them and a fantastic first experience at UMBC. To play this incredibly formative role in a student’s career at UMBC is a privilege, but also a pleasure. Advisors taking part in Orientation join a team that genuinely feels like a team, a dynamic group with high camaraderie who are all in this together. The energy level is high and the commitment deep.

Advisors are generally compensated $100 for each Orientation session, income that is outside the usual pay structures and therefore represents an opportunity to earn cash that would not otherwise be on the table.

The conference will take place on Saturday 26 October 2019, from 8.30-3.30pm. A complimentary continental breakfast and luncheon will be served in the Skylight room.

The program for this one day conference includes presentations by UMBC's adjunct faculty who have received the AFAC Research awards over the past few years as well as musical performances by UMBC's music department adjuncts. The conference will also feature a keynote talk by Maria Maisto, one of the founders of The New Faculty Majority, a non-profit adjunct advocacy group.The afternoon session will focus on new pedagogy techniques, integrating technology in the classroom and adjunct advocacy.

We encourage all UMBC Adjuncts to come to to this creative and informative conference.
