Dear Adjunct Faculty,

We have a challenge in adopting online instruction and learning tools for our respective face to face classes, no matter your department or unit.

During this public health emergency, we must get ensure academic continuity. Fortunately, the DoIT has the resources and personnel to help guide us through this unique situation.  On our campus, Jack Suess and John Fritz as well as their colleagues in DoIT have worked hard to make sure we'd be ready for situations such as this. We commend them for their efforts and results. This is certainly a test of systems and structures.  

Please continue to use the IT tools that are made available for academic continuity. This web site is a helpful tool for faculty and students alike.  

Thanks for everything you do to support our students and ensure their success during these challenging times.

The Office for Academic & Pre-Professional Advising has openings available for summer Orientation Advisors! As an advisor, you would attend Orientation sessions where you would meet with students one-on-one to plan out and register for classes. No previous experience is required, and we will provide all training necessary!

 

Besides compensation, this is a rare chance to gain advising experience – highly sought-after in faculty openings – as well as to interact with students outside of the classroom.

• Part-time faculty are eligible to be compensated at the rate of $100 per all-day session and $50 per evening session.

More details are provided in the application attached below, which is due HERE by May 1, 2020. We will also be hosting a number of informational sessions for those who may be interested:

Office for Academic and Pre-Professional Advising

An adjunct came to us recently and shared some concerns but mentioned that she could not make our bi-weekly meetings.  That inspired us to come up with an new idea: to best serve you we need to come to you.  

With that being said, we are launching an AFAC Listening Tour. While we know we can't reach all adjuncts, we hope that some of you will embrace this opportunity to share your thoughts on working here at UMBC, and help our committee better serve you. 

The way it will work: We will try and schedule meetings with the adjuncts in your department based on the AFAC Chair's availability. Other available members of the committee, particularly the representative of your respective college, would also attend. 

Best days/times are MW after 3:45 pm and Tu/Thurs before 5:00 and after 8:30 pm.  These meetings do not need to be long and if they work well, will become a regular chance for adjuncts to meet with AFAC directly at least once a semester.  

If you're interested in participating, or the adjuncts in your department, email Rob Bennett (AFAC Chair) at bennerob@umbc.edu to set-up a time that will work for the majority of your adjunct faculty, and within the above times and days. 

We look forward to hearing your voices and better do our work on your behalf as a part of shared governance here at UMBC. 

We need to lock-in rooms early, so these are some ideas on potential dates/times for our Fall Conference in 2020.  Please rank your choices which will help us greatly in selecting a final time. Remember this is an adjunct conference and your participation is greatly appreciated.

All adjuncts are welcome.  All meetings are to be held in AD1005 unless otherwise noted,. As these are not large conference rooms, seating is limited.
