Unemployment Workshops Good info to have in these uncertain times

Did you know you may be eligible for unemployment benefits when you do not get teaching assignments or when your assignments are reduced from one academic term to another? Knowing how to access these benefits is more important than ever. However, adjuncts can face particular challenges to their unemployment claims due to their status as employees of educational institutions.


Please join me next Wednesday in an online workshop where we will cover how and why adjunct faculty are eligible for benefits, how to respond to any challenges to your claims, and what has changed due to the pandemic.

RE:                  UMBC Adjunct Faculty Advisory Committee – CALL FOR NOMINATIONS

We invite self-nominations to become representatives on the UMBC Adjunct Faculty Advisory Committee (AFAC). The AFAC is an elected body charged with representing the interests of our part-time adjunct faculty within our campus system of shared governance. Members of the AFAC are responsible for communicating adjunct needs and concerns to the campus administration, making recommendations related to adjunct professional development and working conditions, and providing advice on policies and procedures that concern adjunct faculty. In recognition that adjunct faculty are compensated only for course-by-course instructional services, AFAC members receive a yearly stipend equivalent to one semester course and are reimbursed for travel and other reasonable expenses, consistent with USM and UMBC travel policies.

AFAC representatives will serve a two-year term from Fall 2020 through Spring 2022. Elections are being held for two representatives from CAHSS; one representative from CNMS; one representative from COEIT; and one representative from non-College-based departments and programs. All Adjunct I and Adjunct II faculty employed to provide instruction on a course-by-course basis at UMBC this spring, including UMBC programs at Shady Grove, who have taught in this capacity at UMBC for at least four previous semesters, are eligible for nomination. Please note that regular faculty and staff at UMBC who receive additional compensation to teach on a course-by-course basis are not eligible to serve on the AFAC.  

Self-nominations must include name, College or non-College category, and length of service at UMBC as well as responses to the following questions:

1.       What strengths do you think you would bring to the AFAC? (200 words or less)

2.       What issues do you think the AFAC should be addressing during the 2020-2021 academic year? (200 words or less)

Nomination materials must be submitted electronically via  https://forms.gle/jifhE173NDBbu3GfA by Monday, May 4th.  Candidate statements and voting instructions will be posted the following week and voting will take place over a period of seven days.

To explore this increasingly urgent question, representatives of Santa Monica College and the Pennsylvania State University, both recipients of the 2019 Delphi Award, will draw on their experiences in developing innovative models for supporting non-tenure-track faculty at these two very different institutions. Given annually to recognize institutional innovation in support of non-tenure-track faculty, the Delphi Award is a partnership between AAC&U and the Pullias Center for Higher Education at the University of Southern California’s Rossier School of Education.
