Summer Orientation Advisors Wanted!
A great way to spend some time this summer!
The Office for Academic & Pre-Professional Advising has openings available for Summer Orientation Advisors! COVID hasn’t slowed us down at all, and Orientation is proceeding as usual—except 100% online. Advisors use Webex to meet with incoming students one-on-one to plan out and register for classes. No previous experience is required, and we will provide all training necessary!
Besides compensation, this is a rare chance to gain advising experience – highly sought-after in faculty openings – as well as to interact with students outside of the classroom. As a faculty member myself, I can absolutely say that my teaching effectiveness has been augmented by my advising experience.
More details are provided in the application attached, which is due HERE by April 21, 2021. We will also be hosting a number of informational sessions for those who may be interested, accessible through OAPA’s myUMBC group:
- Monday, March 22, 12-1 PM
- Tuesday, March 30, 12-1 PM
- Thursday, April 8, 5-6 PM

Faculty Caregivers Listening Sessions/Online Survey
Finding Ways to Support Faculty Caregivers
Dear Colleagues,
The Caregiving Advisory Committee would like to invite you to a listening session or complete a brief survey to help us find ways to support faculty caregivers in the short-term and to recommend policies and procedures that strengthen a caregiving supportive community at UMBC. Specifically, we want to check in with you to see how you are doing and understand what you will need to be supported now and in the future.
Our committee is aware of the disproportionate impact of COVID-19 on working parents of young children and faculty who are caring for their elderly parents. We know that many of us are doing both. As members of our committee know firsthand, and as recent research has indicated, COVID-19 related disruptions are particularly hard on women and under-represented minorities.
This spring we would like to gather narrative data regarding the scope of the challenges that faculty caregivers are experiencing to help inform the goals and work of our committee. Please consider participating in one of our online listening sessions below to share your experiences and offer suggestions. These listening sessions are scheduled for:
Tuesday, March 23rd from 1-2pm
Facilitators: Matt Fagan (GES), Erin Lavik (COEIT/CBEE), and Brandy Wallace (SAPH)
Wednesday, March 24th from 12-1pm
Facilitators: Joanna Gadsby (Library), Lindsay Johnson (Music), and Orianne Smith (English)
Monday, March 29th from 11am-12pm
Facilitators: Jennifer Mata-McMahon (Education), Jess Myers (Women’s Center), and Phyllis Robinson (Biology)
RSVP is required to access the listening session link. Please sign-up for your preferred listening time via this google form.
We acknowledge that the very people we want to hear from most may have difficulties in attending the listening sessions. Others may wish to share their concerns in more private ways. With that in mind, we also created a feedback survey to share your experiences and concerns.

The UMBC Adjunct Faculty Advisory Committee's (AFAC) annual funding supports adjunct faculty's research and professional development efforts.
What the award might cover or defray:
- Expenses (travel, fees, etc.) to present at a conference—papers, panels, or visual arts/other presentations; occasionally dues/memberships where required to present
- Expenses to present at another university—seminar presentation, demonstration, etc.
- Support for courses or for professional training in some instances
What the award would not cover or defray:
- Most dues for professional organizations
- Most memberships
- Subscriptions to periodicals or for services
- Expenses to attend conferences, etc., if not presenting

Mitigating Harassment in Online Spaces Workshop (REPOST)
Women's Center: A Workshop for UMBC Faculty and Staff
Remote Learning for All: Mitigating online harassment in curricular and co-curricular spaces
Presenters: Virginia Byrne, Ph.D. & Juana Hollingsworth MSW, Morgan State University's School of Education and Urban Studies.
In our research we have found that most undergraduate students experience online harassment as both the victim and the bystander (i.e., witnessing their peer being harassed online). Few of these students, however, go to their professors or advisors when they need help. In this hands-on workshop we address why students don't turn to their faculty and student affairs pros when they are experiencing online victimization and what you can do to position yourself as a trusted helper.
- We'll talk about the climate and policies that fuel a culture of online harassment, patterns in first-hand and secondary victimization, and why these victims and bystanders don't seek your help.
- Then we will outline policies and practices you can adopt to educate students on online harassment, prevent it from happening in your spaces, and prepare a plan for when a student comes to you for support.
In short, students need us to be aware of and prepared to respond to online harassment.

Building a Class Community Online from Day One
Welcome to our Adjuncts!

This discussion about online teaching is specifically designed to welcome new adjuncts who started teaching at UMBC in 2020-2021 and connect them to other faculty. All are welcome!
Key to students’ motivation and learning is a feeling of connectedness to the class--to the instructor, to other students, and to content. Such feelings foster engagement--an essential element for students to succeed. For many of us creating that sense of community seems easier when we can meet with our students face-to-face. How can we establish connection online? Join with colleagues for a virtual discussion about ways to structure student interactions, demonstrate and manage your presence in the class, teach for inclusion, and convey caring and support in your online course. Please review one of the following two book chapters in preparation for our discussion:
- Chapter 4: “Building Community” from Small Teaching Online by Flower Darby with James Lang--provides a few key ideas to help you think through the process.
- Chapter 6: “Developing Interactivity, Social Connection, and Community” from Online Teaching at Its Best by Linda Nilson and Ludwika Goodson--provides a deeper dive into these issues and links to resources.
Participants may access the ebook online at any time through the AOK library in advance of the session using the following step-by-step instructions:
- Log into myUMBC
- Go to the AOK Library Website
- In the AOK OneSearch box, type the book title and press Search
- Locate the ebook, and click on the link to Online Access under the descriptive information
