The University System of Maryland and UMBC are requiring students, faculty, and staff to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 before the start of the fall semester. This requirement applies to all faculty—including adjunct faculty—that will teach on a physical campus, including all UMBC operated property such as the Columbus Center, the Lions Brothers Building, and the Universities at Shady Grove.

Based on anonymous information from the state health information exchange, we know that more than 80% of our faculty and staff are at least partially vaccinated. However, considerably smaller numbers of adjunct and part-time faculty have submitted and verified their vaccine information. Increasing the number of documented vaccines is essential for our fall safety planning. If you have not already done so, please report your vaccination ASAP. You can check your status and get more information on your COVID Compliance Card in your myUMBC profile.

We have two open seats for CAHSS and CMNS. Committee members receive a stipend for their service.  The committee develops and drives policy that effects all adjuncts on campus. Some of our recent achievements: 

1. Establishment of ADJ III 

2.  Adoption of year-long contracts for long-term adjuncts (still working on this issue for broader use)

3.  Held UMBCs first Adjunct Conference (Fall 2019, and a modified, on-line version in Fall 2020) 

If you have ideas on how to improve things for adjuncts on campus, we'd like to have you join us.  All the details are below. 

We invite self-nominations to become representatives on the UMBC Adjunct Faculty Advisory Committee (AFAC). The AFAC is an elected body charged with representing the interests of our part-time adjunct faculty within our campus system of shared governance. Members of the AFAC are responsible for communicating adjunct needs and concerns to the campus administration, making recommendations related to adjunct professional development and working conditions, and providing advice on policies and procedures that concern adjunct faculty. In recognition that adjunct faculty are compensated only for course-by-course instructional services, 

AFAC members receive a yearly stipend equivalent to one semester course and are reimbursed for travel and other reasonable expenses, consistent with USM and UMBC travel policies.

AFAC representatives will serve a two-year term from Fall 2021 through Spring 2023. Elections are being held for three representatives from CAHSS; one representative from CNMS; and one representative from COEIT. All Adjunct I,  Adjunct II, and Adjunct III faculty employed to provide instruction on a course-by-course basis at UMBC this spring, including UMBC programs at Shady Grove, who have taught in this capacity at UMBC for at least four previous semesters, are eligible for nomination. 

Please note that regular faculty and staff at UMBC who receive additional compensation to teach on a course-by-course basis are not eligible to serve on the AFAC.  

Self-nominations must include name, College, and length of service at UMBC as well as responses to the following questions:

1.       What strengths do you think you would bring to the AFAC? (200 words or less)

2.       What issues do you think the AFAC should be addressing during the 2021-2022 academic year? (200 words or less)

Join us with our special guest Dr. Howard Smead on Friday, May 14 at 4 pm.

Dr. Smead has led adjunct issues at both University of Maryland College Park (UMD) and University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) and brings great insight into issues on both campuses.
 
He teaches in the History Department and Honors College at UMD, as well as working as an Adjunct Associate Professor of History at UMBC.  His courses include twentieth-century American social history and the Civil Rights Movement.
 
He is the author of Blood Justice: The Lynching of Mack Charles Parker, which recounts an all but forgotten lynching in Poplarville, Mississippi in 1959, and Don’t Trust Anyone Over Thirty, a history of the Baby Boomer generation
