Join Instructional Technology for an Accessibility Workshop to review Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles, explore key technology resources to support all learners, and create an action plan to support accessibility in your courses.
Session Objectives
By the end of this workshop, participants will have created an action plan on next steps and resources needed to design accessible courses and create or remediate content for accessibility.
- Recall the guiding principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL)
- Identify a +1 UDL strategy for enhancing one of the following in your course: content, engagement, or assessment
- Identify technology tools like Blackboard Ally for creating or remediating accessible content
- Create an action plan that can support accessibility goals in your course, including appropriate technologies
This workshop will be facilitated by Dr. Susan Biro, Manager, Online Learning, and Josh Abrams, Instructional Design Specialist.

This scheduled 20-minute Webex consultation will offer instructors ideas for developing a strategy to improve your course usability and accessibility and how to get started with Blackboard Ally.

Spring SDS Brown Bag Learning Series
Are you a student looking for assistive technology?
Are you a faculty member who received a letter of accommodation and wants to learn more?
Are you a student curious about assistive technology?
This series is open to all students, staff, and faculty interested in learning more about the intersection of accommodations and technology. We will be demonstrating low tech, and other assistive technology, demonstration captioning options and document remediation
All sessions will be held from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM in Math Psychology 222
Session 1. February 22nd, 12:00-1:00 This session will focus on an introduction to assistive technology available to all students, staff, and faculty
Session 2. March 22nd, 12:00 – 1:00 “I received a letter of accommodation…now what?” This session will take a deep dive into accommodations and their relation to functional limitations
Session 3. April 29th, 12:00 – 1:00 The subject matter for this session will be determined by survey results of what you, the community, would like to learn more about
Session 4 May 17th, 12:00 – 1:00 This session will focus on preparations for accessible course content.

The National Federation of the Blind via a Non-Visual Accessibility Initiate Grant from the State of Maryland has a great opportunity for faculty:
The Accessibility Inclusion Fellowship Program helps instructors begin to include accessibility
concepts in at least one course offering in their institution with help from the nation’s blind.
Your existing course does not need to have an accessibility component. The program consists of
the following:
- Individualized consultation and assistance with course instruction from the National
Federation of the Blind through our Center of Excellence in Nonvisual Access (CENA)
- Sharing of resources to enhance the accessibility of your course
- A monetary award. One award of $2,000 will be made to an instructor of a University
System of Maryland (USM) school or a professor of an independent Maryland college,
and two awards of $1,500 each will be made to Maryland community college instructors.
A brief document that outlines a streamlined application process is attached to this post.
What’s at stake?
Individuals with disabilities, including the blind, cannot live the lives they want without full and equal access to the information and technologies available to the rest of the public, including products, services and benefits available on the Web and mobile applications. Equal access to information which includes non-visual access needs to be incorporated in the education track.
The National Federation of the Blind is committed to the development of innovative techniques for achieving non-visual access to information through the design and development of accessible information and technology systems.
