Celebrating Disability Pride in July at UMBC and Beyond On Belonging, Ending Stigma and Being Authentically Known Disability Pride Month is celebrated in July each year - and in 2013, Chicago's Disability Pride Parade explained their mission as:

"To change the way people think about and define 'disability,' to break down and end the internalized shame among people with disabilities, and to promote the belief in society that disability is a natural and beautiful part of human diversity in which people living with disability can take pride."

The Disability Pride movement is long-standing, and became more evident as a day of celebration in 1990 - the same year that the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) became law. Boston celebrated its first Disability Pride Day that year, however many are also familiar with the earlier 504 disability civil rights movements of the 1970s which is chronicled in the movie Crip Camp, (Crip Camp Netflix link, Crip Camp YouTube link, which highlights the advocacy efforts of Judy Heumann and James LeBrecht, among others). The Capitol Crawl in March of 1990 created momentum for the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act later that year. This July marks the 35th anniversary of the ADA, and many cities across the country celebrate disability pride with parades and festivals. Let's work together to support access and inclusion so more people can say it loud, "I'm disabled and I'm proud!"

The Disability Pride flag strives to be inclusive of all disabilities, the colors/stripes represent:

Red: physical disabilities.
Gold: neurodiversity.
White: invisible disabilities and undiagnosed conditions.
Blue: emotional and psychiatric disabilities.
Green: sensory disabilities, including deafness, blindness, and other sensory disabilities.
Faded Black Background: mourning and rage for victims of ableist violence and abuse.

Celebrate the Anniversary of the ADA on July 26 (a Saturday) on Friday July 25 by coming topping by UMBC's ADS/SDS Open House, or going on theAccessibility Walk and Roll UMBC Tour at Noon.

The Disability Pride movement is long-standing, and became more evident as a day of celebration in 1990 - the same year that the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) became law. Boston celebrated its first Disability Pride Day that year, however many are also familiar with the earlier 504 disability civil rights movements of the 1970s which is chronicled in the movie Crip Camp, (Crip Camp Netflix link, Crip Camp YouTube link, which highlights the advocacy efforts of Judy Heumann and James LeBrecht, among others). The Capitol Crawl in March of 1990 created momentum for the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act later that year. This July marks the 33rd anniversary of the ADA, and many cities across the country celebrate disability pride with parades and festivals. Let's work together to support access and inclusion so more people can say it loud, "I'm disabled and I'm proud!"

Accessibility and Disability Services, including Student Disability Services (SDS) will operate remotely this week (January 3rd through 7th) during regular business hours (8:30am through 4:30pm) and, in general, staff will not be available on campus to proctor in-person tests. Employee accommodation requests and inquiries can be made online the ADS website (link). SDS questions and testing matters for this week should be emailed to disability@umbc.edu.

As you know, UMBC has asked that students, staff, and faculty delay their return to campus, if at all possible, due to the surge in COVID-19 cases. Anyone who wishes to return to campus must have a recent negative COVID test on file as well as meeting additional requirements. See https://covid19.umbc.edu/

For students - the overwhelming majority of winter session courses are being taught online, and those courses with tests will be administered online as well. Registered SDS students who would like to utilize approved testing accommodations for a Winter 2022 course, must submit a Semester Request so that SDS can send your Letter of Accommodations to the instructor. Instructions for submitting a Semester Request can be found at https://sds.umbc.edu/accommodate-semester-request/

For those who are new to requesting accommodations due to their health condition each process is available remotely 24/7 - however it is best to apply as soon as practical - details are here:

During a recent University System of Maryland online gathering , our Assistant Vice Provost jointly presented with College Park about tips and strategies for digital accessibility. We work in partnership with DoIT, and directly with Instructional Technology, beyond our collaboration and communication with faculty and the Faculty Development Center. We are broadly sharing resources campus-wide to refresh awareness, including:

Tips for Creating an Accessible Online Course (from Educause)

which is also posted on SDS's Information for Faculty Resource website (link). and

Faculty Accommodation Guidelines/FAQ for Remote Instruction (link).

These postings supplement and complement ongoing work with DoIT's Instructional Technology office, their department supports Blackboard, Ultra, Collaborate, Ally (Accessibility information linked here) and more. UMBC's DoIT has a strong and enduring association with Educause that informs the drive for inclusive excellence online. The collaboration between Student Disability Services, students with accommodations, Instructional Technology and faculty/Faculty Development began when course content started to shift online and continues today.

Faculty can learn more about Instructional Technology's web-based PIVOT training here. The Planning Instructional Variety for Online Training was mentioned during this week's online Student Town Hall. Additional FAQ information and technology-based training options are also available through DoIT.

Voicethread training, and Universal Design for Learning is being promoted by Intstructional Technology via this link. (Lots of captioning provided via this app during URCAD - it's not just for faculty!)

On a broader scale, UMBC is active with the Association of Higher Education and Disability (AHEAD). The next Maryland meeting includes collaboration with IT and instructional Technology Departments to continue on the path of inclusive excellence.

A gentle reminder - Accessibility and Disability Services remains a resource for anyone fielding a UMBC-related accessibility question or concern. ADS and Student Disability Services are also available for accommodation questions and intakes during this period of telework, and distance learning, including if there is a change in the need for accommodation.
