<Title>Celebrating Disability Pride in July at UMBC and Beyond</Title>
<Tagline>On Belonging, Ending Stigma and Being Authentically Known</Tagline>

    <div class="html-content"><a href="https://www.thevaluable500.com/spotlight/disability-pride-month" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Disability Pride Month</a> is celebrated in July each year - and in 2013, Chicago's Disability Pride Parade explained their mission as:<div><br></div><div>"To change the way people think about and define 'disability,' to break down and end the internalized shame among people with disabilities, and to promote the belief in society that disability is a natural and beautiful part of human diversity in which people living with disability can take pride." <div><br></div><div>The Disability Pride movement is long-standing, and became more evident as a day of celebration in 1990 - the same year that the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) became law.   Boston celebrated its first Disability Pride Day that year, however many are also familiar with the earlier 504 disability civil rights movements of the 1970s which is chronicled in<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crip_Camp" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"> the movie Crip Camp</a>, (<a href="https://www.netflix.com/title/81001496" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Crip Camp Netflix link</a>, <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OFS8SpwioZ4" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Crip Camp YouTube link</a>, which highlights the advocacy efforts of <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Judith_Heumann" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Judy Heumann</a> and <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_LeBrecht" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">James LeBrecht</a>, among others).  <a href="https://newmobility.com/the-capitol-crawl/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">The Capitol Crawl in March of 1990 created momentum for the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act</a> later that year. <Title>May is Mental Health Awareness Month</Title>

Get involved and make a difference!" style="max-width: 100%; height: auto;"></div><div><br></div><div>Each year, millions of people navigate the lived experience of mental illness.  <a href="http://accessibility.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">UMBC's Office of Accessibility and Disability Services</a>, which includes Student Disability Services, joins the movement in solidarity and partnership with <a href="https://my3.my.umbc.edu/groups/hr/posts/149717" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Human Resources</a> with its many departmental partnerships, to promote mental health awareness, fight stigma, and provide support. <Title>Celebrating Disability Pride in July '24 at UMBC and Beyond</Title>
<Tagline>On Belonging, Ending Stigma and Being Authentically Known</Tagline>

    <div class="html-content"><a href="https://www.thevaluable500.com/spotlight/disability-pride-month" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Disability Pride Month</a> is celebrated in July each year - and in 2013, Chicago's Disability Pride Parade explained their mission as:<div><br></div><div>"To change the way people think about and define 'disability,' to break down and end the internalized shame among people with disabilities, and to promote the belief in society that disability is a natural and beautiful part of human diversity in which people living with disability can take pride." <div><br></div><div>The Disability Pride movement is long-standing, and became more evident as a day of celebration in 1990 - the same year that the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) became law.   Boston celebrated its first Disability Pride Day that year, however many are also familiar with the earlier 504 disability civil rights movements of the 1970s which is chronicled in<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crip_Camp" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"> the movie Crip Camp</a>, (<a href="https://www.netflix.com/title/81001496" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Crip Camp Netflix link</a>, <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OFS8SpwioZ4" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Crip Camp YouTube link</a>, which highlights the advocacy efforts of <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Judith_Heumann" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Judy Heumann</a> and <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_LeBrecht" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">James LeBrecht</a>, among others).  <a href="https://newmobility.com/the-capitol-crawl/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">The Capitol Crawl in March of 1990 created momentum for the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act</a> later that year. <Title>May is Mental Health Awareness Month</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><div><div>Each year, millions of people navigate the lived experience of mental illness.  <a href="http://accessibility.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">UMBC's Office of Accessibility and Disability Services</a>, in solidarity with Student Disability Services, joins the movement  with its many departmental partnerships, to promote mental health awareness, fight stigma, and provide support. <Title>Celebrating Disability Pride in July at UMBC and Beyond</Title>
<Tagline>On Belonging, Ending Stigma and Being Authentically Known</Tagline>

    <div class="html-content"><a href="https://www.thevaluable500.com/spotlight/disability-pride-month" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Disability Pride Month</a> is celebrated in July each year - and in 2013, Chicago's Disability Pride Parade explained their mission as:<div><br></div><div>"To change the way people think about and define 'disability,' to break down and end the internalized shame among people with disabilities, and to promote the belief in society that disability is a natural and beautiful part of human diversity in which people living with disability can take pride." <div><br></div><div>The Disability Pride movement is long-standing, and became more evident as a day of celebration in 1990 - the same year that the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) became law.   Boston celebrated its first Disability Pride Day that year, however many are also familiar with the earlier 504 disability civil rights movements of the 1970s which is chronicled in<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crip_Camp" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"> the movie Crip Camp</a>, (<a href="https://www.netflix.com/title/81001496" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Crip Camp Netflix link</a>, <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OFS8SpwioZ4" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Crip Camp YouTube link</a>, which highlights the advocacy efforts of <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Judith_Heumann" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Judy Heumann</a> and <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_LeBrecht" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">James LeBrecht</a>, among others).  <a href="https://newmobility.com/the-capitol-crawl/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">The Capitol Crawl in March of 1990 created momentum for the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act</a> later that year. <Title>May is Mental Health Awareness Month</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><div><div>Each year, millions of people navigate the lived experience of mental illness.  <a href="http://accessibility.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">UMBC's Office of Accessibility and Disability Services</a>, in solidarity with Student Disability Services, joins the movement  with its many departmental partnerships, to promote mental health awareness, fight stigma, and provide support. <Title>Celebrating Disability Pride in July</Title>

<Title>Starting the new year with accommodations? UPDATE</Title>

<Title>World Autism Awareness Day is TODAY!</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><div>The United Nations has declared April 2nd World Autism Awareness Day, and with its prevalence - which was recently updated by the CDC to occurring in 1 in 59 live births in the United States - UMBC has plenty to celebrate among 14,000 students and ~3,000 employees.</div><div><br></div><div>Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a complex developmental disability; signs typically appear in early childhood and affect a person's ability to communicate and interact with others to varying degrees. ASD is defined by a certain set of behaviors and is a "spectrum condition".  There is no known single cause of autism, and early intervention leads to significantly improved outcomes.  Some of the associated behaviors include delayed learning of language; difficulty making eye contact or holding a conversation; difficulty with executive functioning, which relates to reasoning and planning; narrow, intense interests; poor motor skills and sensory sensitivities.  It bears repeating that a person on the spectrum might follow many of these behaviors, or just a few, or be subject to additional diagnostic criteria. The diagnosis is based on the totality of behaviors and their severity*.</div><div><br></div><div>What can you do if someone discloses that they have autism?</div><div><ul><li>Don't jump to conclusions or make assumptions about what the individual's particular challenges related to autism may or may not be.  Every individual on the autism spectrum is different</li><li>Listen for why they might be disclosing to you.  They may only want to be better understood.
