<Title>Making STEM courses more inclusive with lab and lecture hall upgrades</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><p>This summer, UMBC is teaming up with the Maryland Department of Disabilities to upgrade <strong>nine teaching labs</strong> in the Meyerhoff Chemistry Building—marking a major step in fostering <strong>inclusive STEM education</strong>. The goal: ensure all students, including wheelchair users and those with various disabilities, can <strong>fully participate</strong> in core chemistry and biochemistry courses.</p>
    <p><strong>What's Changing in the Labs?</strong></p>
    <ul>
    <li>
    <p>Wheelchair-accessible <strong>sinks, fume hoods, lab benches, and cabinets</strong></p>
    </li>
    <li>
    <p>Lowered <strong>equipment stations</strong> for independent use</p>
    </li>
    <li>
    <p>A <strong>research lab</strong> redesigned for accessible hands-on experience</p>
    </li>
    </ul>
    <p><strong>Lecture Hall Upgrades Include:</strong></p>
    <ul>
    <li>
    <p><strong>Wheelchair-accessible seating</strong> in multiple locations with fold-down tablets</p>
    </li>
    <li>
    <p><strong>TV monitors</strong> for better visibility for low-vision students</p>
    </li>
    <li>
    <p><strong>Standing desks</strong> and seating variations for diverse body types, pregnant students, and orthopedic needs</p>
    </li>
    <li>
    <p><strong>Assisted listening tech</strong> and <strong>designated interpreter areas</strong> for students who are Deaf or hard of hearing</p>
    </li>
    </ul>
    <p><strong>Additional accessibility projects include:</strong></p>
    <ul>
    <li>
    <p>Restroom renovations in the Biological Sciences Building</p>
    </li>
    <li>
    <p>Elevator upgrades across multiple academic buildings</p>
    </li>

Inhaled corticosteroid-containing medications are essential for managing symptoms and preventing severe attacks, yet access to these treatments remains limited in many parts of the world due to high cost or lack of availability.</span><br><br><span>This year, the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) is calling on healthcare professionals, governments, manufacturers, and policy makers to take urgent action to ensure that all individuals with asthma can access the medications they need to live healthy, full lives.</span><br><br><span>It’s also important to recognize that not all experiences of asthma or allergies rise to the level of a disability or create barriers in educational or work environments but for some, the symptoms can be severe enough that adjustments or alternatives are necessary. <Title>On Language and Disability: Some Considerations</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><div>Words matter, especially when it comes to disability, and oftentimes, our department engages in both formal and informal outreach and informal communication about how disability - as an identity, a function of identity, concept and experience. - is communicated.  While the <a href="https://ncdj.org/style-guide/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">National Center on Disability and Journalism has a Disability Language Style Guide (linked here)</a> remains an excellent in-depth resource, it's good to cover some basics.</div><div><br></div><div>The two primary ways that we identify with disability in language are <strong><em>person first</em></strong> (person who uses a hearing aid) and <strong><em>identity first</em></strong> (<a href="https://www.hearinglikeme.com/zoeys-extraordinary-playlist-deaf-performers/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Sandra Mae Frank</a> is a Deaf actor).  Both options have implications for how we, as a community, think about disability, and it is important, when working with individuals to glean  their preference for either centering on identity, or identifying as a person first, which can create distance, especially based on their lived experiences to date. Someone with a person-first perspective may state, "I identify as a person with a disability to separate my Self from the stereotypes and stigma that others associate with disability."</div><div><br></div><div>Similarly, identity-first language challenges the miasma of negativity by claiming disability directly.  This directness embraces the diversity of how brains and bodies work, and the how inaccessible systems, structures and environments  persist and are slow to evolve.  It's important to emphasize that identity-first language is an option.  Lenny Letter exemplifies this with  "<a href="https://www.lennyletter.com/story/i-dont-have-autism-im-autistic?mbid=lenny-newsletter_061218_&amp;bxid=5a57b1413f92a4054ae9992e&amp;utm_term=Lenny_Letter_Active&amp;utm_source=Sailthru&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=Lenny_Letter_061218&amp;utm_content=Final" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">I don't have autism, I am Autistic.</a>" The <a href="https://www.nad.org/resources/american-sign-language/community-and-culture-frequently-asked-questions/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">National Association of the Deaf embraces identity-first language and also acknowledges that Deaf and hard-of-hearing people have the right to choose what they wish to be called</a>.</div><div><br></div><div>When referencing disability, naming it explicitly is important.  Accessibility and Disability Services and Student Disability Services embrace the word  "disability" and work with people with any health condition that may qualify as a disability, regardless of how the person self-identifies.   In the same vein, avoid coming across as condescending by not using euphemisms such as handi-capable, diverseability or differently-abled.  We agree with Lawrence Carter Long's <a href="https://www.publichealthpost.org/research/say-the-word/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">#Say the Word Campaign</a>.  Other terms have been retired or don't apply in higher education where the emphasis is access and <a href="https://adayinourshoes.com/disabled-instead-of-special-needs/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">on not being "Special"</a> and acknowledging that <a href="https://www.nrcs.usda.gov/wps/portal/nrcs/detail/al/about/outreach/sep/?cid=nrcs141p2_022150" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">"handicap" is very Last Century</a>. </div><div><br></div><div><span>The following resources (many with direct links to content) were informed by recent communications from our professional association the </span><a href="https://www.ahead.org/home" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Association of Higher Education and Disability/AHEAD</a><span>.     <div class="html-content"><h1><span><span> </span> </span></h1><p>July 26, 2019 marks the 29th Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act that was signed into law in 1990.  The ADA and the ADA Amendments Act of 2008 (ADAAA) give civil rights protections to individuals with disabilities similar to those provided to individuals on the basis of race, color, sex, national origin, age, and religion. The ADA and ADAAA also assure equal opportunity for individuals with disabilities for access to businesses, employment, transportation, state and local government programs and services, and telecommunications.</p><p>Nearly 57 million people in our country have a disability and nearly 25% of today’s 20 year olds will experience disability in their lifetime. Since 1991, the 10 regional ADA Centers have been established as a support to creating more inclusive and accessible environments by providing  accurate information, resources and training on the ADA to businesses, employers, state and local governments, people with disabilities and their families, advocates, and veterans across the United States.</p><p>Similarly, UMBC's Office of <a href="null" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Accessibility and Disability Services</a> provides technical support and accommodation processes as a support to equal opportunity for the entire UMBC community - beyond<a href="null" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"> Student Disability Services</a>, working in partnership with all campus departments and divisions, including Human Resources, Facilities Management and DoIT.  Through the application of the law and related guidance throughout UMBC, people with disabilities have better access to buildings, classrooms, employment, programs and services, and increasing opportunities for equal and full participation in campus and community life.  Equal access and equal opportunity benefit the whole community.</p><p>If you are looking for a way to honor this occasion at UMBC, sign up <span>to attend Instructional Technology's Blackboard Ultra Ally Orientation on August 23rd at noon from the very accessible location of your own computer!  Details are here: </span><a href="https://my3.my.umbc.edu/groups/instructional-technology/events/71615" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">https://my3.my.umbc.edu/groups/instructional-technology/events/71615</a>  We are thankful that Instructional Technology is a champion of ADA by orienting faculty in the provision of accessible course content.</p><p>If you are looking for ways to celebrate the ADA in your daily life, or through social media, click on the link below for ideas and inspiration.</p><p>Happy Anniversary ADA!</p></div>
