<Title>Global Accessibility Awareness Day is May 15</Title>

    <div class="html-content">May 15th is <a href="https://accessibility.day/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Global Accessibility Awareness Day</a>!  This day is dedicated to discussion and brainstorming about digital accessibility, bringing the experience of one billion people with disabilities to the forefront of online and computer-based experiences.<div><br></div><div>Many of the common accessibility errors within websites are simple to fix-it takes building a habit of clicking that "add alt text" button after uploading an image or double-checking that a link has more than one descriptive word as link text.  These are two of the most common errors found one websites according to WebAIM.  Today, at UMBC, take a moment to familiarize yourself with <a href="https://accessibility.umbc.edu/digital-content-accessibility/website-accessibility-at-umbc/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">web accessibility at UMBC</a> and review your, and your department's digital presence.</div><div><br></div><div>Some ways to honor/make progress on Digital Accessibility:</div><div><br></div><div>UMBC Staff that manage websites can<a href="https://sites.umbc.edu/monsido-website-audit-tool/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"> work with Acquio Optimize (formerly Monsido) tools to support their department's website accessibility.</a></div><div> </div><div><a href="https://my3.my.umbc.edu/groups/instructional-technology/events/142238" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Staff Summer Camp for Digital Accessibility is on June 5 </a>and is currently full.  Contact the organizers to be put on the waitlist. <Title>National Assistive Technology Day is April 17</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><p><span>Join the U.S. Congress, Maryland Department of Disabilities  and the disability community within UMBC and beyond to celebrate <a href="https://ataporg.org/policy-and-advocacy/national-at-awareness-day/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">National Assistive Technology (AT) Awareness Day.</a></span></p><p><br></p><p><span>National AT Awareness Day honors people with disabilities who require AT to access their education, workplace, community, and recreational activities. <Title>Global Accessibility Awareness Day is Today!</Title>

"In a Different Key"- Autism documentary that centers on the experience of Autism within neurotypical communities: From Patient Zero in rural Mississippi, initial discernment with Johns Hopkins healthcare providers, history of healthcare and structural inequality, as well as hope. This film centers on people on the autism spectrum within their families and community, and is available for free through PBS. <Title>National Voters of All Abilities Registration Day</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><div>We join<a href="https://my3.my.umbc.edu/groups/insights/posts/95985" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"> UMBC's celebration of National Voter Registration Day</a>.  Many (people with disabilities -and- those who do not identify as having a disability) wonder about how inclusive voting is, or can be, especially since more than 35 million Americans with disabilities are eligible to vote .  A small sampling of resources include:<br></div><div><br></div><div>The<a href="https://www.eac.gov/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"> U.S. Election Assistance Commission</a> shares and promotes <a href="https://www.eac.gov/election-officials/voting-accessibility" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">information on voting accessibility</a>.<br></div><div><br></div><div>Maryland's Board of Elections is committed to making voting accessible to all voters.  Their page <a href="https://elections.maryland.gov/voting/accessibility.html" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Access Information for Voters with Disabilities</a> has information and instructions for a wide range of circumstances.  The deadline for voter registration is October 13, 2020 in Maryland.</div><div><br></div><div>The <a href="https://www.aapd.com/advocacy/voting/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">American Association of People with Disabilities' REV Up Campaign</a>:  <a href="https://www.aapd.com/advocacy/voting/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Register, Educate, Vote, Use Your Power</a> works to increase voter registration and engagement by working to eliminate barriers to the polls and end voter suppression.  These goals complement <a href="https://my3.my.umbc.edu/groups/insights/posts/95985" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">today's message</a> from our UMBC's leaders:<br></div><div><br></div><div><em><span>"As crucial as voting is, there are many other 
    important ways to take responsibility for the future of our communities 
    and make them thrive. Social change can happen in neighborhoods, 
    workplaces, and everyday settings. You can work with the people around 
    you to address issues in your own communities. Connecting and sharing 
    stories helps people move beyond stereotypes and recognize each other’s 
    humanity.
