<Title>Hope after Trauma: By My Side Documentary</Title>

<Title>Engaging with Disability Awareness Month at UMBC</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><strong>National Disability Awareness Month</strong><span> is  held in October to raise awareness about issues that arise within the lived experience of people with disabilities, and celebrates the many and varied contributions of Americans with disabilities.</span><div><br></div><div>NDAM's roots go back to 1945, when Congress enacted a law declaring the first week in October each year "National Employ the Physically Handicapped Week." In 1962, the word "physically" was removed to acknowledge the employment needs and contributions of individuals with various types of disabilities. In 1988, Congress expanded the week to a month and changed the name to "National Disability Awareness Month" to address inclusion more broadly.<br></div><div><br></div><div>Americans with disabilities make up almost one-fifth of our population, which brings more celebration to this month, underneath the umbrella of the  Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)  <a href="https://www.adaanniversary.org/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">celebrating its 32st anniversary</a>, and <a href="https://my3.my.umbc.edu/groups/accessibility/posts/130484" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Section 504 celebrating its 51st Anniversary</a>. This month includes:</div><div><ul><li><a href="https://www.adhdawarenessmonth.org/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">ADHD <Title>Celebrating Disability Pride in July '24 at UMBC and Beyond</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><a href="https://www.thevaluable500.com/spotlight/disability-pride-month" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Disability Pride Month</a> is celebrated in July each year - and in 2013, Chicago's Disability Pride Parade explained their mission as:<div><br></div><div>"To change the way people think about and define 'disability,' to break down and end the internalized shame among people with disabilities, and to promote the belief in society that disability is a natural and beautiful part of human diversity in which people living with disability can take pride." <div><br></div><div>The Disability Pride movement is long-standing, and became more evident as a day of celebration in 1990 - the same year that the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) became law.   Boston celebrated its first Disability Pride Day that year, however many are also familiar with the earlier 504 disability civil rights movements of the 1970s which is chronicled in<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crip_Camp" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"> the movie Crip Camp</a>, (<a href="https://www.netflix.com/title/81001496" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Crip Camp Netflix link</a>, <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OFS8SpwioZ4" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Crip Camp YouTube link</a>, which highlights the advocacy efforts of <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Judith_Heumann" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Judy Heumann</a> and <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_LeBrecht" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">James LeBrecht</a>, among others).  <a href="https://newmobility.com/the-capitol-crawl/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">The Capitol Crawl in March of 1990 created momentum for the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act</a> later that year. <Title>NEW: UMBC Critical Disability Studies Minor</Title>

<Title>Celebrating National LGBTQ+ Pride with Disability Awareness</Title>

Individuals represent a range of disabilities, races, gender identities, and sexual orientations." style="max-width: 100%; height: auto;"><span>June marks National LGBTQ+ Pride Month and offers the nation the opportunity to reflect on the incredible contributions of the LGBTQ+ community. Our nation is at its best when it welcomes, represents and includes people of all backgrounds. This includes people with disabilities and the intersections shared with the LGBTQ+ community. <Title>Global Accessibility Awareness Day is May 16</Title>

    <div class="html-content">May 16th is Global Accessibility Awareness Day!  This day is dedicated to discussion and brainstorming about digital accessibility, bringing the experience of one billion people with disabilities to the forefront of online and computer-based experiences.<div><br></div><div>Many of the common accessibility errors within websites are simple to fix-it takes building a habit of clicking that "add alt text" button after uploading an image or double-checking that a link has more than one descriptive word as link text.  These are two of the most common errors found one websites according to WebAIM.  Today, at UMBC, take a moment to familiarize yourself with <a href="https://accessibility.umbc.edu/digital-content-accessibility/website-accessibility-at-umbc/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">web accessibility at UMBC</a> and review your, and your department's digital presence.</div><div><br></div><div>Some ways to honor/make progress on Digital Accessibility:</div><div><br></div><div>UMBC Staff that manage websites can<a href="https://sites.umbc.edu/monsido-website-audit-tool/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"> work with Monsido tools to support their department's website accessibility.</a></div><div><br></div><div>UMBC Faculty can check their online course materials and learn more via <a href="https://my3.my.umbc.edu/groups/instructional-technology/posts/131929" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Instructional Technology's link on Course Accessibility to Support All Learners</a> (pawing IT's helpful posts raises awareness too).</div><div><br></div><div>Additionally Instructional Technology and CourseArc have an <a href="https://my3.my.umbc.edu/groups/instructional-technology/events/129631" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">online webinar on Accessible and Inclusive Course Content happening online Wednesday May 8th at 10a, more information is linked here</a>.<br><div><br></div><div>There are many other events, celebrating  Global Accessibility Awareness Day, and <a href="https://accessibility.deque.com/gaad-2024-fundamentals-noram" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Deque (an organization that specializes in accessibility and digital equality) is hosting an upcoming training about digital accessibility fundamental</a>s.
