"As I got older, I started to feel more dependent when I wanted to be independent. Because I was always in and out of the hospital, I always had someone with me. I always had someone accompany me, which I loved. Incoming and returning students may <a href="https://sds.umbc.edu/accommodations/registering-with-sds/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">register for accommodations online 24/7 (link)</a>.  The SDS <a href="https://umbc-accommodate.symplicity.com/public_accommodation/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">registration form is linked here</a>.</div><div><br></div><div>Those returning to campus can look at campus accessibility updates on UMBC's most recent <a href="https://about.umbc.edu/files/2021/08/2021-UMBC-accessible-routes-map.pdf" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">2021 Accessible Route Map.</a>  Facilities Management has been busy while faculty, staff and students were remote - beyond upgrades such as installing hospital-grade air filtration systems.  Additional assisted doors have been installed in several academic buildings, accessible door handles have been added, and five (5) elevators are being replaced: two in Fine Arts, two in Sondheim, and one in Biology's Schwartz Hall, so the campus is welcoming new upgrades as well.</div><div><br></div><div><br></div><div>The post is accompanied by a photo of a musician with brown forearms holding mallets that are poised to play a marimba.</div><div><br></div><div>P.S. <Title>The Americans with Disabilities Act at 31</Title>
<Tagline>Accessibility and Disability Inclusion Matter</Tagline>

    <div class="html-content"><p>The anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities reminds us, as a campus, to  celebrate all persons with visible and invisible disabilities, and remain committed to their equitable inclusion.</p><p>Since its enactment on July 26, 1990, the Americans with Disabilities Act, as amended, and its state-based equivalent statutory protections have provided protections for disability access and inclusion, prohibiting discrimination on the basis of disability in employment, in public accommodation, in public services, in transportation, and in telecommunications. Former President George H. W. Bush called the Act “a new birth of freedom” for Americans who identify as having a disability. This landmark civil rights law has changed society from benevolence towards disability to acceptance. While our campus, both by accessible design and accommodation, endeavors to provide equal access and inclusion for faculty, staff, students and visitors with disabilities, copious work remains, especially within external communities.</p><p>Maryland protects people with disabilities both in Title 20, State Government Article, and in Sections 7-701 to 7-710, Human Services Title. While these laws provide protections, they must be enforced and awareness must continue to be raised to promote equitable access and acceptance of persons with disabilities - on campus, on the job, and in the classroom.</p><p>Recently litigation in Baltimore City brought an assertion about a lack of curb ramps - raising awareness about federal accessibility requirements and the ongoing need for diligence.  On campus, curb cuts and accessible grading are described on UMBC's Accessible Route Map.  All construction and renovation on campus is designed to meet current accessibility requirements.  That being said, repair conditions and maintenance needs arise and should be reported to Facilities Maintenance via Work Control (410-455-2550, <a href="mailto:workorder@umbc.edu">workorder@umbc.edu</a>) or via a department's AIM request.  <a href="https://accessibility.umbc.edu/report-campus-accessibility-concern/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Accessibility concerns may be reported at any time via this linked online form</a>. The replacement of elevators in the Sondheim and Fine Arts buildings in 2021 will be a boost to campus navigation, especially for people with disabilities.  <a href="https://accessibility.umbc.edu/digital-content-accessibility/website-accessibility-at-umbc/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">UMBC's Web Accessibility page (link)</a>, including information for reporting difficulty about digital content accessibility is also shared via the footer of UMBC's websites.</p><p>Additionally, all students with disabilities  - graduate, undergraduate, part-time, full-time -  may seek academic accommodation via <a href="https://sds.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Student Disability Services</a>.  Similarly, employees  - faculty, staff, graduate assistants, student workers, work-study - may <a href="https://accessibility.umbc.edu/employee-accommodation-request/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">seek work-related accommodations via Accessibility and Disability Services</a>.</p><p>Accessibility and Disability Services looks forward to working in partnership with UMBC's diverse and inclusive community to support equitable access to education,  and employment as we reflect on the growth of campus accessibility over the past 31 years.  </p><p>P.S. <Title>PTSD Awareness in June</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><div><br></div><div><div>June is also <a href="https://www.nami.org/About-Mental-Illness/Mental-Health-Conditions/Posttraumatic-Stress-Disorder" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Month - take a moment to learn more about it here from the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI)</a>.  </div><div><br></div><div>June 27th is National PTSD Day - it fell on a Sunday this year. PTSD is a complex disorder caused by experiencing or witnessing trauma.  Trauma occurs with events such as a life-threatening accident, military combat, a natural disaster, sexual assault and more - there are many ways PTSD symptoms can arise, and there is help for those navigating this health condition.</div><div><br></div><div>The US Senate and the National Center for PTSD declared June as PTSD Awareness Month in 2010 - you can help their campaign by educating yourself and others about the health condition, and sharing information about resources with those that might need them.     <div class="html-content"><div><span>June marks National LGBTQ+ Pride Month and offers the nation the opportunity to reflect on the incredible contributions of the LGBTQ+ community. Our nation is at its best when it welcomes, represents and includes people of all backgrounds. This includes people with disabilities and the intersections shared with the LGBTQ+ community.     fight stigma, and provide support. One in five people will have a mental

    <div class="html-content"><div>April is known as Autism Awareness Month, including April 2 as <a href="https://www.un.org/en/observances/autism-day" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">World Autism Awareness Day (link)</a>.   In listening to many within the<span> </span><span>Autism community - there is a call for media to move from using awareness to “acceptance” this year to foster change and inclusivity for those affected by autism – </span><a href="https://www.autism-society.org/releases/media-urged-to-recognize-shift-from-autism-awareness-month-to-autism-acceptance-month-this-april/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">read more about it from the Autism Society here</a><span>.  Information on <a href="https://www.autism-society.org/what-is/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">What is Autism is linked here</a>.</span></div><div><br></div><div>People of all identities around the world live, go to school and go to work with the neurodiversity that Autism brings to a world, often with struggle and difficulty.
