There will be an Immigration Enforcement forum with the President, Provost, Chief of Police, and General Counsel on Wednesday, April 1 from 3-4 PM in the Fine Arts Recital Hall. There will be a virtual listen only option, but in-person attendance is encouraged, particularly if you want to ask questions. This session is intended for faculty. Please consider attending or having someone from your department attend if you are unable. All interested faculty are welcome.

The Women's Faculty Network met several weeks ago, and after much sharing, we realized that we would like to have a facilitated listening session about working under our ongoing challenging conditions —ICE issues, attacks on our identities and our fields of research, the need to emotionally support ourselves and our students, etc. It's all so much!
Please join us and members from other faculty affinity groups for a facilitated listening session with Dr. Jasmine Lee from the Center for Social Justice Dialogue in ITE-456, April 17 at noon. Lunch will be provided.

Asian Cultural Celebration & Awards
Thursday, May 14, 2026
5:30 p.m. - 8 p.m.
University Center Ballroom 3rd Floor
This celebration commemorates the achievements of graduating UMBC students while celebrating the vast cultural diversity of Asian communities and heritage on our campus. We recognize the difficulty of choosing just one identifier or term to capture the vast diversity of all people with heritage in the Asian continent, representing 49 countries and hundreds of cultures. We seek to honor the breadth of experience of people across Asia - East, South, Southwest, West, and Central Asia.
During the gathering, we'll enjoy food together, we'll showcase keynote speakers, student musical and dance performances, and award presentations to honor student contributions, as well as the faculty and staff who've contributed to their success.
Light refreshments and appetizers will be served starting at 5:30 pm for all guests in attendance.
Graduates must check in no later than 5:45 p.m. The program will begin promptly at 6 p.m.
Dress code: We encourage all attendees and graduates to dress in their "celebration best." While cap and gown are not required, we would be thrilled to see attendees embracing cultural attires.
If you would like to nominate a community member for one of our Affinity Celebration & Awards, you may nominate them here using the Awards Nomination Form or https://forms.gle/TLH8uDwccy5gBJtj8. You may submit multiple nominations for the same or different individuals. Please submit all nominations by April 20th, 2026.
For those interested in attending, you can RSVP HERE! Save the date on your calendars! Graduates that RSVP by Thursday, April 30th at 6pm will be highlighted during the event and receive honorary graduation cords.

webcast featuring Stephen Biegun, former US deputy secretary of state, and Sarah Beran, former deputy chief of mission at the U.S. Embassy in Beijing. The webcast will be held in Fine Arts 424 and food will be provided at 6PM.
We will also have a discussion with Robert Daly, former diplomat and director of the Kissinger Institute on China and the United States, moderated by Fan Yang, Director of Asian Studies/Professor of Media and Communication Studies.

Six years after the global pandemic, xenophobia and discrimination remain a persistent reality for Asian Americans, driven in part by the enduring "perpetual foreigner" stereotype.
Join Committee of 100 on Wednesday, March 25, 2026 from 2 p.m. - 3 p.m. ET / 11 a.m. - 12 p.m. PT for a conversation highlighting new findings from the second report in the "2025 State of Chinese Americans survey" four-part series, examining how the assumption of foreignness shapes experiences of belonging for Chinese Americans and broader Asian American communities.
The data reveals a troubling pattern: U.S.-born Asian Americans continue to be viewed as perpetual outsiders, facing race-based discrimination and questioning of their belonging at higher rates than any other racial group in the nation. Those who regularly encounter these assumptions face feelings of exclusion and psychological distress. The stereotype also dampens political engagement, reducing policymaker responsiveness to AAPI community needs. Our panelists will explore what these findings and what can be done:
