Can you help AAAFSC meet with prospective candidates?

One of the things that AAAFSC really needs help with is taking on individual meetings with prospective hires during their on-campus interviews in the fall and spring. Candidates often have questions about UMBC culture and climate for Asian and Asian American faculty, family leave, work-life balance; and members of AAAFSC offer honest and informed answers.

These conversations are a chance to welcome prospective colleagues and offer some help at a stressful juncture in their professional lives, but we need volunteers to make them happen from across the colleges!!

Meetings are one-on-one and usually take 20-30 minutes. We do try for maximum flexibility in scheduling to minimize the burden on AAAFSC members. Conversations with candidates are confidential and entirely separate from search committee deliberations. Even if you can only make one of these meetings, that's a huge help. And more volunteers = less work for everyone!

Please let Tamara (tbhalla@umbc.edu) know if you're interested in helping with this. Anyone interested will be added to a google sheet and notified of requests! I'll also provide guidance on how to answer questions etc.

Many thanks!

Tamara

start of a new term! I am writing with important news about board leadership.
As you all know, our chair, Theo Gonzalves left for a job at the Smithsonian
about a year ago and our secretary, Susan Han has also left UMBC. We wish them
the very best in their new endeavors and look forward to establishing new
    leadership for the council.

And so, I am writing
    with two very urgent requests:

First, please consider running for a board
position. Are you interested in becoming the next chair or vice-chair for
the board? Could you see yourself serving as secretary? I am happy to run as chair—but in that case we would need a vice-chair
and secretary. The members at large for our group (Fan Yang, Amy Bhatt, and
Shuyan Sun) are going to remain in their positions, so we will have their
support through this transition. If you are interested but have any questions,
please feel free to reach out! We would
LOVE to see the involvement on the board spread out through our colleges. It’s
a great opportunity to think about how to recruit, retain, and promote Asian
and Asian American faculty and staff on our campus as well as to think about
programming for faculty, staff, and students.

Second, many departments
are in the midst of hiring. We really need support from our members to meet
with potential candidates. If you can
help the board serve in this capacity please let me know (tbhalla@umbc.edu). We already have requests that we can’t handle
alone. It’s another great way to be involved and support AAAFSC even if you
    can’t serve on the board.

Many thanks for your
attention to this email! Please feel free to nominate folks you think might be
good for these positions as well!

Again, please feel free
to reach out with any questions at tbhalla@umbc.edu.

My best wishes, for a
    great spring semester!

Call for Papers: Hmong Americans; deadline: 15 Nov 2017

<Tagline>A Special Issue of Amerasia Journal</Tagline>

As an emergent but rapidly expanding field, Hmong American/Diaspora Studies has the potential to stimulate a rethinking of traditional paradigms of Asian American Studies and move the discipline in promising directions. Hmong Americans’ historically asymmetrical relationship with the United States government and their contemporary experiences as a marginalized ethnic group have much in common with the experiences of other Asian Americans. At the same time, Hmong relationships with their “homeland” countries, with the U.S. racial state, and with other racial and ethnic groups in American society and elsewhere are unique and complex. Most publications—both scholarly and popular sources on the Hmong, as well as those on Hmong in Asia and Hmong in the diaspora—are still written primarily from the perspective of non-Hmong persons. Our concern about the state and progress of the field is that Hmong’s voices, perspectives, and lived experiences are often distorted or excluded altogether. Equally problematic are analyses that divorce Hmongs’ social conditions from their historical and political contexts.
