In Solidarity and Support

Dear Members of the Asian and Asian American Faculty and Staff Council:

 

The board of the Asian and Asian American Faculty and Staff Council want to express our solidarity and support for Black faculty, staff, and students at this troubling time. AAAFSC was founded, in part, to address inequity and racism and to foster belonging and inclusion at our campus. We mourn the senseless killing and deaths of Ahmaud Arbery, George Floyd, Tony McDade, and Breonna Taylor. We affirm our commitment to support Black lives and communities on our campus and beyond and to fight against anti-Black racism, particularly within our Asian and Asian American communities.

 

We support the statement issued by the Association for Asian American Studies (posted below), and will continue to use our group as a platform in the shared struggle against structural racism and white supremacy.

Statement from the Association for Asian American Studies: June 2020

The Association for Asian American Studies unites in solidarity with our Black family, friends, neighbors, colleagues, and co-workers to call for an immediate end to anti-Black racism and the killing of Black people. We are an organization committed to social justice, intersectional analysis, and global human rights. Our fight against anti-Asian pandemic racism is rooted in a common struggle against White supremacy. The recent murders of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade, and George Floyd propel us to state, clearly and definitively, that Black lives matter and that we must abolish the militarized police state in which anti-Black racism is embedded. To end global anti-Black racism, we must fight racism in our local communities and educate ourselves and others about the rich history of Black Americans and support, validate, and value Black lives now and always.

The Provost's office and UMBC's Committee on the Recruitment, Retention, and Advancement of URM Faculty want to know how COVID-19 is affecting is affecting URM faculty.  Autumn has asked the leaders of affinity groups to share community needs, concerns, and impacts.  

What can the provost's office to do help you or your students during this time? I feel that our group in particular could use some extra support. So far, we are thinking of suggesting some online training for instructors around xenophobic language in relation to COVID-19 and perhaps a student survey around these same issues.

We know this is a very busy time at the end of an extraordinarily stressful semester, but if you have a few free moments to share your thoughts, please email them to Tamara Bhalla (tbhalla@umbc.edu).  We'll compile them and pass them on anonymously.  Please send us your responses by Wednesday, May 27.

Dear All:

I hope you are coping and managing as best you can! As you all know, our group is here to support Asian and Asian American faculty and staff on campus. 

This unprecedented pandemic has not only taken a toll on world health, but has had repercussions for members of the Asian and Asian American community worldwide. Please know that AAAFSC is here to support you, and that you can reach out any time, if you are in need of resources or help.

There is a lot of information out there on this, and as an Asian American studies professor, I can say that this is, unfortunately, another chapter in the U.S.'s long history of racializing disease and stigmatizing Asian communities. I wanted to share a few key sources on the subject:

1. Our very own Charissa Cheah was quoted on the subject in this recent Washington Post article--which you can find  here: "Trump has no qualms about calling the Corona Virus the Chinese virus."

2. The People’s Collective for Justice and Liberation will be presenting a Townhall on Anti-Asian Racism on Saturday, March 28, 2020 from 3pm-5pm PST/ 6pm-8pm EST. 

Asian American organizers, and other people of color we are in community with, will facilitate a conversation on race, struggle and solidarity in the time of a global pandemic.

Candidates for AAAFSC (Spring 2020-Spring 2022):


Chair: Tamara Bhalla

Tamara Bhalla is an associate professor in the Department of American studies. Her research and teaching interests focus on Asian American studies, South Asian diasporic and literary studies, and contemporary practices of reading. She is the chair of the South Asian section of the Association for Asian American studies and has held several leadership positions within that organization. She is also co-chair of the CAHSS Women’s Faculty Network and currently serving as the acting chair of her department. 


Vice-Chair: Jiaqi (Jackey) Gong

Jiaqi Gong is an assistant professor in the Department of Information Systems. His research and teaching interests focus on the convergence of human and artificial intelligence applied to smart and connected health, education, and workplace. He is the faculty mentor of three student organizations; Chinese Student Association, Chinese Student and Scholars Association, and Chinese Bible Study Fellowship. 


Secretary: Fan Yang

Fan Yang is an associate professor in the Department of Media and Communication Studies and the acting associate director of the Dresher Center for the Humanities (2019-2020). Her research and teaching interests include cultural studies and globalization, media and communication in modern and contemporary China, urbanism and urban communication, and visual culture. She is also a faculty affiliate in the Asian Studies program, and serves on the Global Studies Coordinating Committee.

Aditya Desai

Aditya Desai is an adjunct lecturer in the English Department, and is advisor to the Cancer Awareness Society. His fiction and criticism about and within South Asian diaspora has been published in several literary magazines and journals. Off campus, he sits on the board of CityLit Project, the coordinating committee of Baltimore Asian Resistance in Solidarity, and editorial staff of Atticus Review.


Soonhee Lee, Ph.D. 

Soonhee Lee is a licensed psychologist and Assistant Director/Training at the Counseling Center. She provides mental health services to undergraduate and graduate students and oversees an APA-accredited doctoral internship in Health Services Psychology at the Center.  She values community engagement and mental health advocacy for underserved and underprivileged populations. Her research interests focus on evidence-based practice, brief therapy training for doctoral interns, and Korean-Americans’ ethnic socialization. She is a SCD (Standing Committee on Diversity) member of the Association of Counseling Center Training Agencies.


Shuyan Sun

Shuyan Sun is an associate professor in the Department of Psychology. As a board member of the AAAFSC since its founding, she is eager to continue her service to AAAFSC and work with all members to build a stronger community.

As the spring term fast approaches, we are about ready to have our election for a new board. So far we have almost enough candidates for a full board, but we would really like to see more participation from our membership!

Please consider running for a position! In particular, we need at least one more candidate (preferably more than one) for the member at large positions. This is a great way to get involved without having to do too much. And we would love to see some participation on the board from our CNMS colleagues!
