Dear AAAFSC Community,
Are you interested in a financial planning lunch seminar to learn strategies and tips for achieving and maintaining financial well-being?
Financial well-being is critical for families and individuals. Achieving and maintaining financial well-being requires regular assessments of your personal financial situations and careful long-term planning. Financial planning becomes even more important given the current high inflation and volatile stock market.
The AAAFSC executive board is considering sponsoring a financial planning seminar over lunch in November or December. The seminar will be delivered by certified financial planners (CFP). Potential topics include:
- Family Financial Planning Basics
- Family Protection Plan (e.g., life insurance)
- Education Planning (e.g., 529, college financial aid)
- Investment Risk Management
- Retirement Planning (It's never too early to start planning)
- 401/403/457 Rollover Options
- Social Security and Medicare
- Long Term Care Planning
- Estate Planning
- Tax Saving Strategies
If you are interested in this seminar, please complete a quick survey by Friday Oct 14, so we know what topics we are most interested in and what time works the best for us.
Just in case you are curious how this idea came up. Back in May, several members and I were chatting. One member brought up the issue of financing college education for their kids, which led us to talk about different things such as 403b, investing in stocks/mutual funds, and taxes. It was a great conversation and we all learned something from each other. However, there were many missing connections in our shared knowledge. We felt the need to learn from experts. Many thanks to Zhibo Zhang (Physics) for suggesting this seminar and finding certified financial planners for us .

The Asian Division’s Florence Tan Moeson Fellowship: Now Accepting Applications for 2023
It’s fellowship season! The Library’s Asian Division is happy to announce that it is now accepting applications for the 2023 Florence Tan Moeson Research Fellowship Program. Please note that the fellowship application is accepted only via email submission. In order to apply, the applicant must download the application form and follow the enclosed instructions. The deadline for the 2023 application season is midnight January 16, 2023 US Eastern Time.
The purpose of the fellowship is to provide individuals with the opportunity to pursue research in the area of Asian Studies, using the unparalleled collections of the Asian Division and the Library of Congress in Washington, DC. The fellowships are for a minimum of five business days of research at the Library of Congress. The grants may vary from $300 to $3,000 and are to be used to cover travel to and from Washington, overnight accommodations, as well as other research expenses. All research trips need to be completed before September 15, 2023. Graduate students, faculty, independent scholars, researchers, and librarians with a need for fellowship support are especially encouraged to apply.

Dear UMBC Staff and Faculty,
My name is Tory Williams, and over my 15-year relationship with UMBC I have held roles as a graduate student in biology, faculty member in education, and currently serve as staff in the Faculty Development Center. I am taking steps to establish a new affinity group in our campus community for Neurodivergent Staff & Faculty (and those interested in showing allyship toward this population).
Neurodivergent Staff & Faculty are those that identify as, but not limited to…autistic, ADHD/ADD, bipolar, learning disabled, cognitively disabled, Tourette Syndrome, epileptic, dyspraxic, OCD, etc. In alignment with the inclusive nature of both the Neurodiversity Movement and the Social Model of Disability, staff and faculty who self-identify under the neurodivergent umbrella are welcome, regardless of access to medical or professional diagnoses.
Per the helpful guidance of my faculty and staff peers at UMBC, my first step in building a Neurodivergent affinity group is to invite community members to share any expressed interest in joining such a group. Once I measure the collective need or desire for a group, my next step will be to invite interested parties to discuss plans for an executive committee and outlining bylaws.
