A Conversation on Xenophobia (Fear of the Foreigner) 3/10/23

Our AAAFSC members Irene Chan (Visual Arts), Charissa Cheah (Psychology), and Fan Yang (Media and Communication Studies) are leading A Conversation on Xenophobia: Past and Present , Friday, March 10, 2023, 12 - 1 PM.

Please considering attending and encouraging students you are teaching, advising, or mentoring to attend. This is an excellent learning opportunity for the whole campus.

Xenophobia, or fear of the foreigner, has intensified in recent years in America, as seen, for example, through the increased anti-Asian sentiments under COVID-19. This conversation will reflect on the historical and contemporary forces that inform the discrimination against people of Asian descent as “perpetual foreigners.” Connecting the (often erased) Asian American experience to broader discussions of (im)migration and globalization, we will also explore helpful ways to challenge xenophobia and remedy its impact on mental health and well-being through artistic, scientific, and media practices.

An essential career guide for every Asian American—and all their co-workers and managers—that explains how traditional Asian cultural values are at odds with Western corporate culture.

Leading Asian American career coach and advocate Jane Hyun explains that the lack of Asian Americans in executive suite positions is brought about by a combination of Asian cultures and traditions strait-jacketing Asian Americans in the workplace, and how the group’s lack of vocal affirmation in popular media and culture, afflicts them with a “perpetual foreigner syndrome” in the eyes of Americans who don’t know enough to understand the challenges placed on Asian Americans in the corporate environment.

Filled with anecdotes and case studies from her own consulting experience covering the gamut of Asian Americans from various backgrounds, the book discusses how being Asian affects the way they interact with colleagues, managers, and clients, and will offer advice and real world solutions while exposing the challenges encountered.

For the Asian reader, the book will help them to see the cultural barriers they subconsciously place in their own career paths and how to overcome them. For the non-Asian reader, the book serves as a primer for promoting optimal working relationships with Asians, and will help start a dialogue that will benefit all.

Urging the Resignation of Chancellor Thomas Keon (Purdue University Northwest) for Racist Anti-Asian Mockery

To the Purdue University Board of Trustees:


At the Purdue University Northwest fall commencement ceremony on Dec 10, Chancellor Thomas L. Keon imitated an "Asian" language in front of family and friends who were celebrating the achievements of their loved ones. Although Chancellor Keon  issued an apology, which was accepted by the Board of Trustees, it is clear from his statement that he does not understand the impact that his racist behavior had and is having on Asians and Asian Americans, who are already experiencing and coping with heightened levels of anti-Asian hate since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic. Racism directed toward Asians and Asian Americans in the United States has a long, violent history that dates back to the 1800s and continues to impact the safety and health of this growing and heterogeneous population. The statement by Kris Falzone (Associate Vice Chancellor for Marketing and Communications) to the Chronicle of Higher Education that the Chancellor’s statement was taken out of context is further troubling. The Vice Chancellor’s statement not only excuses but also justifies the anti-Asian racist comments made by Chancellor Keon. Furthermore, the complicity of the other administrators and faculty on stage who laughed at the Chancellor’s comments is equally troubling as it reveals an environment in which racist behavior such as this is accepted, tolerated, and encouraged. The response by the Purdue University Board of Trustees to accept Chancellor Keon’s superficial apology without meaningful action leads us to recommend the following.


We the undersigned are urging the Purdue University Board of Trustees to:

Request Keon's resignation as Chancellor
Empower and fund campus diversity initiatives, led by Asian American students, staff and faculty, to create a more inclusive and safe environment for Asians and Asian Americans at all Purdue University campuses
Require anti-racist training for all administrators, staff, faculty, students at Purdue University Northwest

Approximately 41% of the state of Maryland’s Asian American population resides in Montgomery County. In Montgomery County, Asian Americans comprise of about 15% of the County’s overall population. A little over 27% of Asian Americans in Montgomery County are 55 years of age and above. Given the large percentage of Asian American older adults, it is important to understand the needs of Asian American older adults and their caregivers. Due to cultural norms, caregivers’ stress in Asian American communities is more complicated. Lack of resources and support for Asian American caregivers adds to the stress and burnout. Please join us for a discussion about this topic and learn how to support Asian American caregivers.

Learning objectives:
1. Brief information about the Asian American Health Initiative (AAHI), MCDHHS
2. Local Asian American population demographics
3. Cultural expectations around caregiving in Asian American communities
4. Risk of stress and burnout among Asian American caregivers
5. Best practice in supporting Asian American caregivers

About the presenter:

Phoebe Shih grew up in Taipei, Taiwan and came to the US to pursue Master of Social Work degree at St. Louis University in St. Louis, Missouri after graduated from college. Through her career, Phoebe has been working with diverse populations including refugees sponsored by the United Nations from 1987 to 1992. In addition, Phoebe was a psychiatric social worker at an in-patient psychiatric hospital in Chicago for years before relocating to Montgomery County.

 Phoebe is a licensed certified social worker, clinical level in the State of Maryland. She currently is the senior wellness coordinator at Asian American Health Initiative(AAHI), part of Department of Health and Human Services Montgomery County. Prior to joining AAHI, Phoebe was a social worker for Adult Foster Care Program for over 5 years at Aging and Disabilities, DHHS Montgomery County. Before Adult Foster Care Program, Phoebe was a social worker for Child Welfare Services, DHHS Montgomery County for 16 years.
