Everyone loves the performance t-shirts we made last time (see picture below). This is why we're doing it again this year! Though our budget is very limited, we will do the best to order different styles and sizes for our group. Our plan is to have the t-shirts ready for giveaways in Spring 2024.

I am delighted to announce that the Office of the Provost is piloting three faculty mentorship workshop programs this year, beginning in October. These programs are intended to provide institutional level support to faculty at transitional moments in their career when it would be helpful to receive advice and feedback from others. The three centralized faculty mentoring programs are for new faculty (hired within the past three years), recently promoted faculty, and for new leaders (chairs, program directors, center directors, major committee chairs, etc). The workshops are optional and are designed to complement mentoring activities that are already taking place within departments and colleges.

Dear AAAFSC Community,

Before we leave for our well-deserved summer, I would like to express my gratitude and appreciation of your engagement with AAAFSC this year. To rebuild our community that was interrupted by the pandemic, we had monthly events throughout the year to provide multiple opportunities for members to interact. I was glad to meet so many new colleagues who joined UMBC in the past three years and reconnect with lots of friends I have known for years. Your engagement has made a huge big difference. Thank you very much for sharing your thoughts and ideas with me. I will incorporate them into our future events. 

I am happy to report that we had significant increases in membership this year. As of today, we have 10 staff members and 76 faculty members. All faculty and staff members who identify with AAAFSC are welcome to join. Please spread the words about our group. I expect another big increase in the Fall semester as we welcome new faculty to UMBC. 

Each year, we receive $3,000 from the Provost's Office for community-building efforts and public programming. This year's financial report can be found here (access restricted to UMBC users only). If you have any questions about the report, please do not hesitate to contact me. We will receive the fund for 2023-2024 on July 1, 2023. Ideas about using the fund are welcome and highly appreciated.

I invited President Valerie Sheares Ashby to our Fall 2023 opening event and will work with her office to identify a date over the summer. I look forward to seeing everyone in the Fall! 

Finally, I would like to thank AAAFSC executive board members for their time and efforts to fulfill the mission of AAAFSC. Lots of appreciation to Autumn Reed and Sarah Wong for their excellent administrative support. 

However you choose to spend your time in the next three months, I hope you have the opportunity to relax, recharge, and reconnect with your family, friends, and communities.

Dear AAAFSC Community,

Thank you very much for participating in our Spring 2023 election. We had the highest level of member engagement in the history of AAAFSC. 

We thank Chris Tong (Modern Languages, Linguistics & Intercultural Communication) who will be cycling off his two years of leadership to AAAFSC at the end of this semester. 

Just in case you haven't met Chris: 

Chris speaks English, Mandarin Chinese, Cantonese, and German and has reading knowledge of French and Japanese. He also helps coordinate Chinese language teaching in the Department of Modern Languages, Linguistics & Intercultural Communication. Chris publishes on the intersection of culture, politics, and ecology in modern China and the United States. In this story in UMBC Magazine, Chris shares his Fulbright experience in the People’s Republic of China with Catalina Sofia Dansberger Duque and talks about his personal connections to research.

We also welcome Mohan Sundaram to the AAAFSC executive board. Mohan will serve as a member-at-large from Fall 2023 to Spring 2026. 

Mohan is a Lecturer in the Information Systems department at UMBC. He has a BS in Chemical Engineering, an MS in Industrial Engineering, and an MS in Operations Research from Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, OHIO. He has over 32+ years’ experience at GE Lighting in various capacities in the Supply Chain Organization. His strength lies in bringing practical business applications and experiential learning to the classroom. He teaches classes in the areas of applied Business Statistics, Management Science, Data Analytics, Operations Management, Logistics, Lean Six Sigma and Global Supply Chain at both Undergraduate and Graduate levels. He is passionate about teaching statistics and quantitative methods for business decision-making. He is also APICS and Six Sigma certified. His teaching experience includes Johns Hopkins, UMD, Towson, UMBC, UBALT, Kent, CASE, John Carroll, and Cleveland State Universities.
