Living the Life of Learning
Before you know it, your undergraduate education will come to an end. You’re probably excited to say goodbye to papers, lab reports, and exams (unless you plan to attend graduate school)! But learning does not have to end when you graduate; your educational journey could just be getting started.
In fact, lifelong learning can come in a variety of forms, including:
- meeting and engaging with new people
- traveling
- community involvement
- reading and keeping up to speed on current events
- pursuing career opportunities, certificate programs, and picking up new hobbies!
Here are a few tips/resources to help you become a lifelong learner:
UMBC Graduate School: If you plan on pursuing an advanced degree, look no further! Visit the
Graduate School website to learn more about our exciting program offerings! Check out the Career Center’s website for more information and tips on applying to graduate school.
UMBC Division of Professional Studies: Do you already have a job lined up but are still interested in continuing your education?
UMBC's Division of Professional Studies has courses, certificates and programs designed to fit the working professional’s busy schedule. Check out upcoming
events at our Main Campus or Shady Grove Campus!
UMBC Training Centers: If you want to gain a new skill and need flexible and affordable options, you may want to visit
UMBC Training Centers. High-quality, flexible, professional education and training opportunities are available year-round! Some courses are open to all individuals (no application needed).
Remain active: Clubs/organizations are available outside of college! A simple Google or social media search will direct you to various local activities where you can participate, take lessons from aerobics, to sports, or even learn a new language!
Meetup.com is also an excellent resource for connecting with people who share similar interests!
Build your brand: Our
Career Center is not just for current students! Alumni can make connections through various services that the Career Center offers. Seek out professional development opportunities within your workplace, including conferences, workshops, mentoring programs, or leadership training. Now that you are in a real-world setting, there will be other skills you will need to learn!
Stay in touch: As your graduating class prepares to travel down different paths, you will have so much to offer one another as you gain further knowledge and life experiences. By staying in touch with former classmates, you may encounter opportunities to collaborate in work or network in a field different than your own. To start, you can join UMBC’s
Chapter of Young Alumni or other UMBC professional communities. Membership is free via the
UMBC Alumni Association, which offers chances for networking and fun throughout the year. You can also participate in
Retrievers Connect – an online platform that provides an opportunity for alumni to connect to support UMBC students, and connect with faculty and staff all in one space to support professional and career connections.

Remember that life after college is what you make of it. Keep an eye open to the countless experiences waiting for you outside of UMBC. Your very next lesson may carry you through life!
Upward Bound Math Science and Classic Upward Bound are seeking college students to serve as tutor counselors for our Summer Residential Programs. The roles vary between day, afternoon, evening, and night based on staffing needs.
Upward Bound is a nationwide, federally funded educational program authorized by the Higher Education Act of 1965 for high school students. Upward Bound serves students who have demonstrated academic potential and meet the income and first generation to obtain a four-year college degree criteria established by the U.S. Department of Education. The Program provides students and their parents with an opportunity to invest in students’ futures and thus realize their potential and goals.
The Upward Bound Math and Science (UBMS) program is designed to strengthen the academic (i.e. math and science) skills of participating students. The goal of the program is to help students recognize and develop their potential to excel in math and science and to encourage them to pursue postsecondary degrees in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) fields and ultimately STEM careers.
UBMS serves students from Baltimore county and Baltimore city who have demonstrated their academic potential and their commitment to working hard to achieve the goal of obtaining a four year college degree. Participants must also meet the income and first generation criteria established by the U.S. Department of Education.
The programs will run from approximately June 24th - August 2nd with a week of training immediately before.

Taking Inventory and Acquiring New Skills for the Workforce
The skills you’ll acquire throughout your academic life offer more to your future career than you might realize! As a student, you develop technical skills related to your major. Engaging in a wide range of experiences outside the classroom will help you build well-rounded, transferable skills to enhance your academic work and make you stand out.
By reflecting on some of the following questions, you can start to figure out what types of meaningful experiences could complement the academic field you are pursuing:
What do you consider your overall strengths?
What are some interests you have outside of your academic major?
How would you rate your communication skills?
Do you have any leadership experience?
Do you enjoy working in groups or by yourself?
Do you consider yourself creative?
What’s your approach to problem-solving?
Here are some ways to help you build transferable skills at UMBC!
Join a student organization - Besides being a meaningful way to connect with your peers over shared interests, being involved in a student organization is a great way to take the initiative on projects you care about and work together outside the classroom. You can also add your voice and find your place within our campus community. You can also stay connected through both virtual and in-person
campus life initiatives!
Gaining real-world experience through an internship, research, or co-op is one of the best ways to make yourself a competitive candidate for full-time jobs and graduate/professional school.
The Career Center offers career advising and counseling, networking events, on-campus recruiting, on-campus interviews, career and professional skills education, and applied learning opportunities (internships, co-ops, and research) to help prepare you to envision your future career opportunities!
Consider adding a minor to your degree—Complementing your primary major with a minor or certificate program can be a great way to add extra knowledge and new skills to your bachelor’s degree. It can also be a great way to explore other personal interests you might have and make you unique in the eyes of future employers. Exploring programs such as foreign language studies or entrepreneurship can greatly enhance any major. Check out all the
possibilities and talk them over with your
advisor!
Get involved with Service Learning and Community Engagement through the Shriver Center – Ever want to apply what you’re learning outside the classroom?
The Shriver Center has you covered! You could step outside the school's boundaries and experience the real world through its Service-Learning and Community partnerships. Through The Shriver Center’s many opportunities, the UMBC community can continue to serve organizations through capacity-building projects and digital delivery of services.
Consider becoming a student worker – UMBC has many job opportunities for students. This can be a great way to apply what you’ve learned at UMBC to help other students and gain proper job experience! From tutoring to working in various offices around campus, check out
